An Otherwise Disappointing Life Lyrics
I have a long list of tepid disappointments
It doesn't mention you
And if I'm honest your name could be upon it
If this didn't feel so good
In an otherwise disappointing life made right
On an otherwise disappointing night, there's a fire
I don't need water I just want to wave goodbye
Goodbye to an otherwise disappointing life
I took a pain pill to scrape a hole we could both get lost in
And cover love's bruise
So lay upon me and push until it's all forgotten
There are worse ways to lose you
In an otherwise disappointing life made right
On an otherwise disappointing night, there's a fire
I don't need water I just want to wave goodbye
And bring this otherwise disappointing life back to life
I have a long list of tepid disappointments
And you should burn that too
In an otherwise disappointing life, you made right
On an otherwise disappointing night, there is a fire
In the heart chapel suffering in silence, you are the choir
That sings this otherwise disappointing life back to life
It doesn't mention you
And if I'm honest your name could be upon it
If this didn't feel so good
On an otherwise disappointing night, there's a fire
I don't need water I just want to wave goodbye
Goodbye to an otherwise disappointing life
And cover love's bruise
So lay upon me and push until it's all forgotten
There are worse ways to lose you
On an otherwise disappointing night, there's a fire
I don't need water I just want to wave goodbye
And bring this otherwise disappointing life back to life
And you should burn that too
On an otherwise disappointing night, there is a fire
In the heart chapel suffering in silence, you are the choir
That sings this otherwise disappointing life back to life

We miss you, Scott.
Another beautiful break-up song by Scott, though I'm sorry he has to keep going through them.
The chorus is all about rebirth/starting anew, hence a fire on an "otherwise disappointing night". His waving goodbye is to his old relationship that he took a "pain pill" to ignore.
Stick with me on this one...
We all know that Scott was a drinker...
I personally think this song is Scott singing not to alcohol itself, but to drunkenness. When he says OTHERWISE disappointing life I don't think he means his life wouldn't be disappointing if he hadn't started drinking. I think he means it is disappointing when he isn't drunk. It's like a love song and a thankyou to drunkenness for taking away his pain.
"I don't need water I just want to wave goodbye, goodbye To an otherwise disappointing life"
(using alcohol to forget his problems/pain)
"I took a pain pill to scrape a hole we could both get lost in And cover love's bruise"
(any drinker knows that painkillers thin your blood meaning you get drunk quicker, and what covers the pain of heartbreak better than alcohol?)
"I have a long list of tepid disappointments And you should burn that too"
(Asking alcohol to help him forget all his regrets.)
"In the hollow chapel suffering the silence you're the choir That sings this otherwise disappointing life back to life"
(His body is the chapel, being drunk is the choir singing him back to life)
