Fire Away Lyrics
Honey load up your questions
And pick up your sticks and your stones
And pretend I’m a shelter for heartaches that don’t have a home
Choose the words that cut like a razor
And all that I’ll say is
[Chorus:]
Fire away
Take your best shot
Show me what you got
Honey, I’m not afraid
Rear back and take aim
And fire away
Well, I wish I could say
That I’ve never been here before
But you know and I know
That I’ll always come back for more
Your love might be my damnation
But I’ll cry to my grave
[Chorus x2]
And pick up your sticks and your stones
And pretend I’m a shelter for heartaches that don’t have a home
Choose the words that cut like a razor
And all that I’ll say is
Fire away
Take your best shot
Show me what you got
Honey, I’m not afraid
Rear back and take aim
And fire away
That I’ve never been here before
But you know and I know
That I’ll always come back for more
Your love might be my damnation
But I’ll cry to my grave

The lyrics of this great Stapleton tune are in reference to the unconditional love that is shared by two people, especially when those words are said as vows for marriage. Through thick and then... It is saying "Fire away" as in; Give me all you've got, whatever baggage or problems come with you or come to us in our future and pasts, no matter how strong the bullet - I will stand strong alongside you forever, no matter what. Because that is what true love is. Hope even if y'all dont agree - you love the song. If you get a chance, the Official Music Video is a must watch! Very Powerful!
To me, this fits my life perfectly. I’m married to a hot-headed woman whose self defense mechanism is anger and defensiveness. Otherwise, she’s perfect. We have a beautiful relationship but if the slightest thing goes wrong (no matter how big or small) she’ll go into this mode where she uses words to defend herself. It’s rough sometimes but this song reminds me of exactly how it goes.
Excellent song.
You often find yourself the target of very hurtful things that your spouse says/does when they're really just taking their pain out on you. You end up taking on some of that pain yourself; here he welcomes it to help shoulder her burden, becoming "a shelter for heartaches that don't have a home." Loving someone with mental illness often leaves you with your own wounds. You may know very well that loving this person and sticking by them "might be your damnation," but you accept the sacrifice. As the wife of a combat vet with complex issues, this song is heartbreakingly perfect.
