Swan Song Lyrics

Put your white tennis shoes on and follow me
Why work so hard when you could just be free
Cut your moaning or I'll cut your legacy
Let's leave the world for the ones who change everything

Nothing could stop
the two of us
Let's just get lost
That's what we want

And I will never sing again (ooooh)
and you won't work another day
I will never sing again (ooooh)
With just one wave it goes away
It will be our swan song (x3)

Darling dive deep and dark blue suede
Rushing up from the water with an ice spade?
And you've been gone so long, you missed everything
The world can change in a day if you wait

But nothing could stop
the two of us
That's what we want
We could just get lost

And I will never sing again (ooooh)
and you won't work another day
I will never sing again (ooooh)
With just one wave it goes away
It will be our swan song (x3)

Your life
where you're going to (Come to me)
Say goodnight
Say goodnight to the life in the world we live
I'm gonna follow you

And I will never sing again (ooooh)
and you won't work another day
I will never sing again (ooooh)
You won't work another day
It will be our swan song (x4)

Put your white tennis shoes on and follow me (x3)
Why you work so hard when you could just be free

Call me crazy, but to me, this sounds like Lana is singing to herself. Old Lana, Lizzy Grant, singing to new Lana, after she's found fame.

She's basically telling herself "Why are you doing this? Why are you working so hard? Is it even worth it? Is this all really what you want?" She's telling her she could return to the freedom she once had, and that a part of her still longs for, and she could end everything now and be done with it. A "Swan Song" is basically the end, it's the final performance before the singer goes away.

Lana has admitted herself that she's had some struggles with fame and she's spoke a few times about retiring, though thankfully it hasn't happened. Sometimes I think deep down she wishes she could return to her old lifestyle and live carefree like she used too, and in a way she feels like she's missed out on a lot by choosing the path that she's chosen, which would explain the lyrics "And you've been gone so long you've missed everything."

This is such a beautiful song. One of my favorites off of Honeymoon, for sure.

@GoddessofLove This is amazing.

I think this song is about having a suicide pact with your lover. Think about it.

@LoudSilences didn't mean to submit this comment so much, my laptop just went weird, sorry.

I think it's pretty clear that she's singing about leaving her career behind— she's also talking about running away with someone as she leaves it behind. "Leave the world for the ones who change everything" implies she doesn't feel she's making a difference in society, as opposed to the "ones who do everything" while she sings and writes songs. She's not sure if her career is fulfilling enough long-term.

"I will never sing again, and you won't work another day"— it's a song about departure, from careers, maybe even from life itself. This song makes me wonder about her future as a musician, as she's said many times that she may never write another album, but she always does. Her duplicitous interviews make it even more puzzling as she references feeling trapped in the industry and saying dramatically that she wants to die.

It's hard to tell if what she's done made of herself is what she really wants in her life.

Did anyone notice that the intro faded vocals are from High By the Beach?!!!!!

I never thought this was a suicide pact song, I think it's more likely her literally wondering whether being famous is worth it, and that she wants to just dissappear with her lover to be free from the media hahah (i kinda picture the house from HBTB too here, great place to retire to?)

Lana sings about someone that has disappeared due to work/break up, she sees them as being gone for so long that the world and herself are different , possibly even death is imminent; "ice and water" are symbols for death in film; which Lana loves considering her fascination with Hollywood. She wishes that she can be her old self again too ...possibly with him maybe one last time. She would do whatever it takes to be for that last shot, leaving her career behind for it. I Find this interesting that this is the last song on the album.

I think in this song she's singing to another person about running away and forgetting about everything and just being free. singing about saying goodbye.
