This song pretty clearly drew inspiration from Dorothy Parker's poem of the same name. The refrain "Lips that taste of tears, they say, are the best for kissing" is taken directly from Parker's poem.
This song also seems to use a similar rhythm and rhyme scheme to the poem, to the extent that you can sing the poem using the song's tune.
