Music to Watch Boys To Lyrics
I like you a lot
(Putting on my music while I'm watching the boys)
So I do what you want
(Singing soft grunge just to soak up the noise)
Blue ribbons on ice
(Playing their guitars, only one of my toys)
Cause I like you a lot
(No holds barred, I've been sent to destroy)
Pink flamingos
Always fascinated me
I know what only the girls know
Knows what lies akin to me
I, I see you're going
So I play my music
Watch you leave
I like you a lot
(Putting on my music while I'm watching the boys)
So I do what you want
(Singing soft grunge just to soak up the noise)
Blue ribbons on ice
(Playing their guitars, only one of my toys)
Cause I like you a lot
(No holds barred, I've been sent to destroy)
Velveteen and living single
It never felt that right to me
I know what only the girls know
Lies can buy eternity
I, I see you're going
So I push record
And watch you leave
I like you a lot
(Putting on my music while I'm watching the boys)
So I do what you want
(Singing soft grunge just to soak up the noise)
Blue ribbons on ice
(Playing their guitars, only one of my toys)
Cause I like you a lot
(No holds barred, I've been sent to destroy)
I live to love you
And I love to love you
And I live to love you, boy
I live to love you
And I love to love you
And I live to love you, boy
Nothing gold can stay
Like love or lemonade
Or sun or summer days
It's all a game to me anyway
I like you a lot
(Putting on my music while I'm watching the boys)
So I do what you want

In this song Lana reflects on her baby sitting days, she worked as a child-care professional from 2008-2011, mostly taking care of the children of close friends.
The first verse (I like you a lot, putting on my music while I'm watching the boys) talks about Lana's relationship with the children she takes care of, she likes hanging out with them, putting on pleasant music in the background, as it is entertaining but doesn't divert her attention from looking after the boys.
(Playing their guitars, only one of my toys) Lana entertains the children by playing on a guitar for them, a technique that many child-care professionals use to calm down riled up children. This line truly shows the lyrical genius Lana is, the second part, only one of my toys refers to the fact that she has many other ways to entertain the children, she is ready for this job and she knows she can do it well.
Pink flamingos Always fascinated me I know what only the girls know Knows what lies akin to me
Now that she successfully calmed down the children, they are looking at a picture book together. A nice relaxing activity for everyone involved.
Velveteen and living single It never felt that right to me I know what only the girls know Lies can buy eternity
Lana didn't have a relationship which was solid enough that she felt it would be a responsible thing to have children of her own, and she expresses her distress over that in the first two lines. In the last two, she talks about the fairy tales she entertains the boys with until they fall asleep for the night, which means her work for that day is done.
I, I see you're going So I push record And watch you leave
As any responsible Nanny, Lana watched out for the security of the children she had to take care of. This line describes that even when they wandered around the house without her supervision, it was all right because Lana put a surveillance system in the house so she could always track her boys, they were always watched while she was there. (While she played her music, music to watch boys to.)
I live to love you And I love to love you And I live to love you, boy I live to love you And I love to love you And I live to love you, boy
The bridge moves the narrative of the song forward in a beautiful way. Now that the children are asleep, Lana watches them sleep and talks to them, she tells them she loves them, tonight, she is theirs. She exists to take care of her boys.
Nothing gold can stay Like love or lemonade Or sun or summer days It's all a game to me anyway
As the night draws to an end, Lana is reminded that the parents of the kids will be here soon, and she can't stay much longer. While she is not very happy about it, she gets over it. They are not her own children so she doesn't take her role as seriously as if they were her own.
Putting on my music while I'm watching the boys Putting on my music while I'm watching the boys
The closing lines of the song describe Lana's final moments with her boys before the parents arrive: she listens to soft music in the background while making sure that the kids are okay. She really does a great job as a nanny.
I think this song is about how Lana is falling for this guy but she doesn't show it. She knows he's falling for her too but he doesn't show it either. I think she listens to music while " watching the boys" because she wants to drown out the thoughts of her falling for him because she knows he's a player and he's just messing with her. The line , "nothing gold can stay" explains that she knows he won't be with her and fall for her like he is doing right now. So she puts on music so she can savor the moments she has with him before he is gone.
Okay that babysitting nanny comment freaks me out........
I think this is about the days when girls hang out with the boys. Reminds me of middle school hahaha. Sounds like she's trying to be a player with the boys, while acting sweet, doing what they want, while at the same time being a 'destroyer', taking their hearts but not giving hers up completely? "its all a game to me anyway"
The blue ribbons on ice gives me this vibe that the whole 'girls and boys' interacting is like a dance
@subversiviolence Well blue ribbon is a type of cheap beer so it might be that.
