Concrete Backyard

Another spot of green filled up with parking space
it's getting harder to find heaven in this place
enclosed by the deep abyss between the flats and office blocks
focussing upwards there's some breathing room above
Where the white of skies so wide changes into blue or grey
I try to identify the clouds that form the strangest shapes
Fickle as they are it's an exciting thing to chase
but the breeze stirs my vision and my daydream quickly fades
Concrete city of mine

How you fascinate me
there's no place I would rather be
Late in the evening but it's never dark downtown
illuminated rooms in buildings all around
mercury vapor lights faintly copy the moon
these after hours are almost as bright as afternoon
But with imagination this city grid
mirrors the milky way and planets in transit
Alleys, lanes and streets like a galaxy district
then the smog clouds my reverie or all that's left of it

Where do you go to hear the mockingbird sing?
There's only static and not even in sync
car alarms, construction work, and traffic resound
all that is living here, is living out loud
But there's a symphony of stillness in the air,
if you just listen closely for the intervals out there
The 24 hour-economy is a noisy affair
so we must cherish every bit of silence we can spare
