Stole the Show (feat. Parson James) Lyrics
Darling, darling
Oh, turn the lights back on now
Watching, watching
As the credits all roll down
Crying, crying
You know we're playing to a full house, house
No heroes, villains, one to blame
While wilted roses fill the stage
And the thrill, the thrill is gone
Our debut was a masterpiece
But in the end for you and me
Oh, this show, it can't go on
We used to have it all,
But now's our curtain call
So hold for the applause, oh
And wave out to the crowd
And take our final bow
Oh, it's our time to go,
But at least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
Darling, darling
You know that we are sold out
This is fading, but the band plays on now
We're crying, crying
So let the velvet roll down, down
No heroes, villains, one to blame
While wilted roses fill the stage
And the thrill, the thrill is gone
Our debut was a masterpiece
Our lines we read so perfectly
But the show, it can't go on
We used to have it all
But now's our curtain call
So hold for the applause, oh
And wave out to the crowd
And take our final bow
Oh, it's our time to go
But at least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
Stole the show
Stole the show
Stole the show
Stole the show
Oh, turn the lights back on now
Watching, watching
As the credits all roll down
Crying, crying
You know we're playing to a full house, house
While wilted roses fill the stage
And the thrill, the thrill is gone
Our debut was a masterpiece
But in the end for you and me
Oh, this show, it can't go on
But now's our curtain call
So hold for the applause, oh
And wave out to the crowd
And take our final bow
Oh, it's our time to go,
But at least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
You know that we are sold out
This is fading, but the band plays on now
We're crying, crying
So let the velvet roll down, down
While wilted roses fill the stage
And the thrill, the thrill is gone
Our debut was a masterpiece
Our lines we read so perfectly
But the show, it can't go on
But now's our curtain call
So hold for the applause, oh
And wave out to the crowd
And take our final bow
Oh, it's our time to go
But at least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
At least we stole the show
Stole the show
Stole the show
Stole the show

Hi there, I'm just going to present these in the order I feel they make the most sense. While not immediately apparent, I feel this is definitely a breakup song. We used to play this every time after our speech tournaments, and while I would love to just think that this can be taken either way, it is really a breakup song.
The refrain is where we get the most out of this song. Its telling us that their relationship is heading downhill, and while it was fun in the beginning, its just kind of over now. 'There's nobody to blame for our relationship going down, and while everybody thinks its going fine, there is just nothing between us anymore. When we started out, it was fantastic, something i want to remember, but it just died out, and there really is nothing left in the end'
The chorus tells us just a bit more on what the refrain did. 'it was a great experience, but that was then, this was now. We knew this was going to happen eventually, we shouldn't hide it from our friends/family anymore. This is it, and even though this was a fantastic journey and I'll remember it for the rest of my life, it's time to let go.'
The first verse doesn't tell us much, But it could be referring to the events immediately after the other lyrics. 'we are both crying, everybody is watching, wondering why it didn't work out.'
The second verse is equally vague. I find it very easy to feel like these verses are afterthoughts or the events preceding. 'darling, you know its over and you knew it had to happen eventually, but the world moves on, and it is a depressing time for us, we are crying and we are sad, but its time to move on.
Pretty self explanatory. A killer debut performance and now it's over and they brought the house down.
My dance studio had it's very last recital this Sunday and this song was playing during curtain call. It was so sad at the moment cause of the lyrics and almost everyone started crying. Soooo maybe that's what the song means? Otherwise it's still a very sad song for me :,(.
I think this song is about a relationship between two people coming to an end. He's singing about how it was a good relationship while it lasted and even though it is coming to an end, let's have one last good time together hence 'the show it can't go on'. He is comparing his relationship ending to the end of a show.
I think its about a couple and their life here on earth. They were a match in the midst of all different types of people. They were both special as individuals but better together... and like everything that begins, has to end. They left together so I wouldn't consider "the show" their relationship, but their time here on earth.
This song very meaningful to me. About 6 years ago, right after i turned 22, i was diagnosed with an aggressive bone cancer (turned out not to be). As we were getting everything together for the biopsy and chemo and everything i decided to look up the mortality rate of this particular cancer which was extremely high. I picked this song to be the song played at my funeral if the day was to come. I knew it was about a relationship but felt like it fit very well.
