Cardinal crashed into my window, I think he might die
I'll plan him a funeral, I'll read his last rites
'Cause I know what he saw in that reflection of light
On the glass was a better life

Staring at a hole in your chest that's been dug there for decades
American broken promises
Caught between the lies you've been fed
And a war with your bloodstream
I should have been there when you needed a friend
I was off on my own again
Selfish and stupid

So if you call me back or let me in
I swear I'll never let you down again
I know the devil you've been fighting with
I swear I'll never let you down again

I had that nightmare again
You're seven and helpless, angry as hell
And you balled up your fists but I laughed at your swings
And I beat you half-conscious
I know that I failed you, woke up in a sweat
I want those years back

So if you call me back or let me in
I swear I'll never let you down again
I know the devil you've been fighting with
I swear I'll never let you down again

We're no saviors if we can't save our brothers
We're no saviors if we can't save our brothers

So if you call me back or let me in
I swear I'll never let you down again
I know the devil you've been fighting with
I swear I'll never let you down again

So if you call me back or let me in
I swear I'll never let you down again
I know the devil you've been fighting with
I swear I'll never let you down again
Never let you down again

    My Interpretation

This is just my interpretation on the music video, which is very symbolic and really gives insight on the true meaning of the song.

The MV for Cardinals, long story short, is a slow motion video of the lead singer carrying his friend to an ambulance. They're both soaking wet and his friend is unconscious, leading you to believe he's drowning and obviously needs medical help. The ambulance, however, keeps driving down the road with the back doors open and a paramedic screaming and gesturing at him to run faster. He can't run any faster. The ambulance becomes too fast and he stops running as the song ends, still clutching his friends in his arms with a defeated look on his face, obviously not being able to save him.

I feel like this is symbolic of a one-sided relationship. Whether it be romantic or platonic, we've all been a part of one. One person works harder than the other to keep it going, putting all their effort to make it work while the other doesn't care if this relationship lives or dies. The way Soupy carries his friend seems to be a metaphor for carrying someone through a relationship. They put no effort in so all the weight is put on your shoulders, therefore weighing you down and as that ambulance drives away (your last chance at making it work), you collapse and can't do it anymore. Powerful stuff.

To me, this is in the POV of someone in a relationship who put no effort in, therefore it ending. They say you don't know what you have until it's gone, so this is exactly what's happening. After separating, they realize the mistakes they've made and understood how toxic they were to the other person, but begging for forgiveness anyway.

In short, it sounds like an "I'm sorry, I've changed" to someone who gave up on them after a long time of getting nothing in return.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
