It a beautifully composed song and you can just picture it used as a slow dance song at say a wedding. However, much like 'Every Breath You Take' you probably need not to think too much about the verse as it seems more like its talking about the ending of a relationship.
It sounds like it's about the suspense in a complicated relationship. Perhaps, a relationship where they don't even know each other well. The person who is mentioned in the first line is trying to make assumptions about something, giving it much thought. But I think that the interpreter, deep down, loves that other and the other also intuits the same thing. They are in a kind of agon, and at the same time they expect something from the other. That you don't know very well, what is it, what are you waiting for? Perhaps they are submerged in their own contradictions and the main question is how they are going to save this almost-nothing they have, this kind of complex friendship that they have...
Well, it seems like, they have an oddly game for play...as the singer once said;
