Hole in the Ground Lyrics

Follow me down, down into a hole in the ground.
I dug it just for you, exactly how you wanted me to.

It's been over a year.
The snow isn't what brought us to tears.
The ambulence came way too late,
And they lied to your face.

I'm calling to see how things are there.
I want you to know how much I care.
I wish I could take away your pain.
I fear I come home to see your grave.

Mother, please dont cry.
I'm states away and begging to die.
I left you all alone.
I'm scared everytime I come home.
We made it through the mess.
The doctor said they're doing the best.
Their best just wasn't enough,
and we cried all through the month.

I'm calling to see how things are there.
I want you to know how much I care.
I wish I could take away your pain.
I fear I come home to see your grave.

Cover art for Hole in the Ground lyrics by Superheaven

I think it is pretty obvious what this song is about. The loss of a loved one, and the guilt and pain brought about by it.

From lyrics, I gather that this loved one ended their own life out of either reasons of depression, or maybe by accident. I know that the Jar album is quite dark at times, for example the song "Youngest Daughter" is about Taylor Madison's sister who was dealing with drug abuse issues. Not to pull inferences out of the air, but when I listened to "Hole in the Ground" for the first time it made me strongly think about "Youngest Daughter."

As I was saying before though, it is never explicitly stated who this loved one is. Could be his sister, could be somebody completely different. But nonetheless it is a good song full of melancholy and heart ache. I personally have not dealt with the loss of a close family member, so it is an interesting insight to the guilt brought about and pain. The lines I draw this from is where Taylor sings, "I left you all alone," and "I fear I come home to see your grave."

Either way whether I'm right or wrong, it is a good song that I enjoy greatly.

A thank you to Superheaven and Taylor Madison.
