So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Pouring rain
Pouring rain
New beginning
New beginning
(x2)
New beginning
I think I found you in the fault lines
I think I found you in my searing pain
I think I saw you from my window
You were dancing in the pouring rain
Is this love that I found?
Is this a new beginning?
I wanna pull you against my skin and
I wanna know what goes inside that lovely mind
Hey, lovely mind, oh
You've got an ocean inside your bones and
I think I'm losing myself in your salty eyes
Hey, salty eyes, oh
Is this a new beginning?
New beginning (x6)
Is this a new beginning?
Is this love that I found?
Is this a new beginning?
(Pouring rain)
New beginning (x2)
I think I wanted you to come down
I think I wanted you to ease my pain
I swear I'm trying to forget you
But you keep running circles through my brain
Is this love that I found?
Is this a new beginning?
I wanna throw you against my skin and
I wanna know what goes on inside that lovely mind
Hey, lovely mind, oh
You've got an ocean inside your bones and
I think I'm losing myself inside your salty eyes
Hey, salty eyes, oh
Is this a new beginning?
New beginning (x6)
Is this a new beginning?
In my dreams, you are a part of me
Under my skin, I give you all of me
Pouring rain
New beginning
New beginning
(x2)
New beginning
I think I found you in the fault lines
I think I found you in my searing pain
I think I saw you from my window
You were dancing in the pouring rain
Is this love that I found?
Is this a new beginning?
I wanna pull you against my skin and
I wanna know what goes inside that lovely mind
Hey, lovely mind, oh

I think I'm losing myself in your salty eyes
Hey, salty eyes, oh
Is this a new beginning?

When my World had turned upside down. My fault was loving you for who you were, faults and all. I looked past your betrayal & forgave. Wasn't enough. I fought to not let your past lies and betrayal build walls around my heart. When all was over unexpectedly I saw another through my window. I didn't fall in love instantly. My heart was in my open hand & I walked with being open to selflessly give my love & receive love. We eased the pain of both our pasts. She saw my open hand & also handed me her heart. Vulnerability through selfless love. The risk of getting hurt is worth the risk of finding Real Deep Love. True emotional connection. To be accepted for who you are, loved for who you are, not for how you make them feel, not for outward appearance but real love. This is the beginning of friendship. Dependent on each other for anything. The beginning of a true relationship. Growing together.
