In the Commonwealth, Boxing Day is the day after Christmas. Apparently this song is about an incident a few years ago when her girlfriend's mother died on Christmas Day. The girlfriend was desperately trying to reach her, but she was, by her own account, "out getting drunk somewhere" and couldn't be reached ("I let you down"). Somehow their relationship survived, though.
