Drawn to the Blood Lyrics

I’m drawn to the blood
The flight of a one-winged dove
How? How did this happen?
How? How did this happen?

The strength of his arm
My lover caught me off guard
How? Head of a rabbit
How? Head of a rabbit

For my prayer has always been love
What did I do to deserve this?

With blood on my sleeve
Delilah, avenge my grief
How? God of Elijah
How? God of Elijah

As fire to the sun
Tell me what I have done
How? Heart of a dragon
How? Heart of a dragon

For my prayer has always been love
What did I do to deserve this now?
How did this happen?

He has changed "my lover caught me off guard" to "the father of my last child" live in concert. Pretty sure this is about parental abuse.

Damn this song cuts deep. Bad things happen to good people even when their intentions are good. Extra pertinent to me cause my name is Elijah and I'm fucking pissed off right now. Thanks

i am getting vibes of domestic abuse. i hope his mother didn't go through that but a lot of mentally ill women do unfortunately

@k4zoo So he said, it was a relationship he was involved in that this song was written about. I do wonder though if the relationship might be his relationship to mental illness or his mother's mental illness or something less tangible and more conceptual than a man.

"Asked whether the abusive relationship described in “Drawn To The Blood” was his own, he simply answers, 'yes'." - Interview with Uncut Magazine, April 2015

This song is about Sufjan's own abusive relationship with a male lover.

@ilurvepibbles or a female lover. He often sings from varying perspectives, and has been VERY careful about not revealing his sexual orientation.

More likely, this is about his relationship with his mother (which is pretty much what the entire album is about).

My take on this song is Daniel's message. This is the Biblical Daniel and his message about judgment and liberation, to keep the faith, because God's care will take care Sufjan in the end. He mentions God's grace. It keeps him from stopping at the Holiday Inn, or from driving the car into the canyon. My take on the abusive elements is how without his faith, he'd likely do himself in, that living with the memory of his mother's abuse when she was alive, and now living with the ghost of those memories consumed him. In his mind, and in his heart he always return to her, how she never showed him the kind of love a boy deserves from Mom, instead how she abandoned and hurt him.
