I think this song is about struggling to believe, after you realize that what you believe in his a myth.

In the version Gallant covered of this song for a spotify session, I believe? Stevens said the Blue bucket was a myth from the Gold Rush era where some kids were out playing with a blue bucket and had filled it with rocks. When they got back in town their parents noticed it was filled with gold. I thought it was an interesting fact, I don't add much to this conversation, lol, I know, but this song is lovely.
I read elsewhere in an article written by Ariana Bacle, that Oregon myth has it that pioneers in the 1800s stumbled on some pebbles that they initially thought were copper—only to find out years later that what they found was actually gold. By that time, they’d forgotten where they found the gold, and the location still remains a mystery.
