This song is simply lovely. It makes me want to just get into my car and drive. I think it's about knowing that things and people in life are going to change and the uncertainty and unknowing of how things are going to turn out. At the same time, it has an optimistic and hopeful vibe to it. No matter what the outcome is, you'll be able to work through it and "begin again..." as the lyric echoes.

"Oh, girl, it's been a while Since we met, out there in the cold It seems so long ago It's hard to imagine The lives we used to have When the nights were ours alone"

Could be interpreted as having been in a relationship for so long that you forget who you were before it, or that you forget what it was like when it was just the two of you, before children. Either way, time has passed.

A couple is looking forward to the day their children grow up and leave; a day when their work is done, and they will have time for each other.

But there is a problem in the family and they have grown apart.

Now they will have to find strength, because it's going to be hard, and all they have is each other.

Love this song -- I see it as being a couple in a long-standing relationship, where the guy is realizing that he kind of thought, ok, I\'ve found her so it\'s now just going to be happily ever after, and now he\'s waking up to the fact that things have continued to move along, and he needs to reassess things.\n\nIn particular, I think this is about having kids ("when the nights were ours alone") and realizing that there are new responsibilities and effects from that.\n\nBut it\'s a wonderfully positive song, really, both with the jangly upbeat music and the "well, guess we\'ll just begin again" with the underlying emphasis on "we".

I love this song so much. I'm graduating high school in less than a month and my girlfriend is moving to a different state and yeah, these lyrics are hitting hard at the moment. The Shins never fail get me in the feels lol.
