Favorite Record Lyrics

Do you do, do you remember
When we drove, we drove, drove through the night
And we danced, we danced
To Rancid, and we danced, we danced

And I confessed, confessed to you
Riding shotgun underneath the purple skies
And we danced, we danced
With windows down, and we danced, we danced

You were the song stuck in my head
Every song that I’ve ever loved
Played again and again and again
And you can get what you want but it’s never enough
And I’ll spin for you like your favorite records used to
And I’ll spin for you like your favorite records used to

And I can’t, I can’t, I can’t remember
Just how to forget, forget the way
That we danced, we danced
To Danzig, and we danced, we danced

And when you asked, you asked me how I’m doing
Like you know, you know how much better off I am
And when we danced, we danced
With windows down, and we danced, we danced

You were the song stuck in my head
Every song that I've ever loved
Played again and again and again
And you can get what you want but it’s never enough
And I’ll spin for you like your favorite records used to
And I’ll spin for you like your favorite records used to

I’ll spin, I’ll spin, I’ll spin, I’ll spin
For you, for you, for you, for you, for you

It could be about the singer being reunited with a girl he used to love. "I spin for you like your favorite records used to" Hes using a simile. He misses her and how they used to be. Like how when you listen to a song you used to love for the first time in a long time. You remember why it was your favorite and why you loved it in the first place. Hes trying to make her remember why she loved him and why they loved eachother. To be like they used to be.

Here's my breakdown/interpretation of the lyrics:

- speaker and subject spent a lot of time together dancing and driving to many places the speaker questions whether the subject remembers it

speaker revealed a secret to the subject during one of the trips

the secret is that songs the speaker listens to make them think of the subject (and/or) the speaker can't stop thinking about the subject the speaker listened to the songs that reminded them of the subject repeatedly (and/or) the speaker hasn't been able to stop thinking about the subject for a long time the speaker will do anything for the subject (and/or) the speaker has replaced the void the subject's favorite records left the subject no longer listens to their favorite records for unknown reasons (lack of time? loss of interest from depression? outdated technology? simply forgotten? this is where the meaning of the song becomes somewhat subjective) (this is meant as the speaker declaring love for the subject being the secret)

the speaker will always remember their time together travelling and dancing

the subject cares about the speaker the speaker is better off than before they met the subject

(same as third section)

the speaker is devoted to the subject.

As far as I can tell from all that, this is essentially a love song, where the speaker found meaning in their life through meeting/travelling/dancing with a particular someone.

This someone has lost touch with their past, their favorite records, which is why the speaker questions whether the someone remembers their time travelling together.

No longer being in touch with your past self or your interests (favorite records) is a common symptom of depression, which leads me to believe this song is about the speaker attempting to console someone they dearly love who is going through hardship by reminding them of their good times together, and promising that they'll do anything they can to help. The speaker will be there for the one they love like their favorite records used to.

My Interpretation

@CrazyMLC Forgot to mention, but there are also implications that the speaker and the subject are no longer together, and there may be some bitterness, which may in fact be the cause of why the subject no longer enjoys their favorite records, because they remind them of the speaker. But that does make the lines saying that the speaker will spin for the subject like their favorite records used to somewhat confusing. There are a few ways to interpret the song.

I think it’s the speaker recalling their love of the person mentioned and how they used to think about them all the time. They probably tried to get them to love them by giving a lot to them probably emotionally but not getting anything in return (you can get what you want but it’s never enough) and them spinning for the person is them trying to please them to get them to love them. In the second chorus, when it says “when you asked me how I doing like you know how much better off I am” it seems like the speaker is talking about how not being with the person is good for them because they’re not trying to constantly please them or think about them all the time.
