A Midwestern State of Emergency Lyrics

I am a dead man, I’m crawling into a trap.
A horizontal response, I'm laying down for you once again.
You've taking what's granted.
I've said goodbye to my friends, I've thrown myself headfirst into this. Close the curtain and strand me.
Found myself lost again, with even more excuses, and even less concern.
Bound and gagged but I enjoy it, you seduce your prisoner before you take your turn.

So lay me down in the field and put me under the trees in the tall grass, where they won’t find me.
Enjoying silence and peace until the sirens they come back screaming, taking me away.
I’ve given all I can give so don’t let me

Go back between Woodward and Cass, cracked concrete and broken glass.
This run down block with my name in lights.
Your saving grace, my final rites. 11 Miles from where I was when I conceded my head, embraced my lost control.
Innocence in a state so pure, you hear the demons calling to take back what you stole.

So lay me down in this field and put me under the trees in the tall grass where they won’t find me.
Enjoying silence and peace until the sirens they come back screaming, taking me away.
I lost a piece of myself, and I forgot to slow down and just breathe and it’s scaring me.
I’ve given all I can give so don’t let me go.

I am a dead man and it’s the only way it can end.
I don’t know who’s side I’m on anymore and there’s no starting over.

Go back between Woodward and Cass, cracked concrete and broken glass. This run down block with my name in lights.

The primary concert venues right there are the Fox and State Theatre. The State is now known as the Fillmore. Cass and Woodward run parallel, and while the venues are beautiful, they would have been surrounded by decay and neglect when this song would have been written and released. Broken concrete would describe the streets, sidewalks, and the surrounding buildings. There were broken windows in most of the surrounding architecture and busted bottles on the street. His name in lights refers to the bands name on the front marquis.

It was wild to see such an awesome space in the downtown area surrounded by such rot. They’ve improved downtown a lot since then. That space is still sad to look at.

Learning that their new album "I Am Alive In Everything I Touch" is based from Shane's tour experiences, I think this song tackles about the downside of touring. Hence, the "I am the dead man" lines that are placed at the start of the song and after the second chorus. Also, don't forget the last two lines of the first verse ("found myself-concern", "bound and-turn"), wherein it speaks about regretting that he had made the decision of living life in the fast lane ("the tour/rockstar life"), but at the same time, enjoying what comes along.

I still can't figure out the "Woodward and Cass" reference though. Maybe it's a metaphor for a certain phase in his life? Whatever, I'll decipher it soon.

The album is split into four parts, each taking place in a different geographical region of the State's. This song actually takes place in Detroit (my home town) and Woodward and Cass is a popular corner downtown. Most of this album is relationship based, as is this song. Hope this helps.
