Out of the Canyon Lyrics

Out of the canyon
I walk to the water
I am dying for a sign of life
In this endless night
I follow the sand
To a shore of fossils and bones
That laid to rest
On the skeleton coast

And now I know
I got lost long ago
I feel so alone
It swallows me whole, whole,

I hold up a skull
Like a shell to my ear
I can hear its last breath
Echo of regret
I’m led on by stars that shine like
Lanterns in the night
The only light
From that empty sky

And now I know
I got lost long ago
I feel so alone
It swallows me whole, whole

And now I know what I lost long ago
The emptiness grows
It swallows me whole

Now I know
I got lost long ago
The unknown
It swallows me whole, whole whole

Cover art for Out of the Canyon lyrics by SPELLES

This is just my opinion, SPELLES songs are very poetic so I could multiple interpretations here but I think it's about death. The person in this song is dead but doesn't know that she is until the end when she lets the sea swallow her whole. Here's why.

First off, she's coming out of a canyon, through darkness into "lanterns of light." She's literally going out of the dark into the light. Like the bright light that we're supposed to see when we're dead.

Then she sees, "fossils and bones, laid to rest." A literal allusion yet again to the dead. She's literally walking along a beach of old souls or the reminains of humans, or images of death all around her.

"I got lost long ago," meaning she's far from home in a beach literally filled with skulls and bones. She's lost, she has no idea where here is or what's happening to her, signifying some kind of transformation like into death.

She puts a shell to her ear, and "hears its last breath." Maybe that's really supposed to be her last breath when she realizes that she's now dead.

After that line, she says there's an emptiness in her probably because she learned the secret, she's dead. And the sea swallows her whole, she succombs to death and everything it represnts.

That's what this song says to me at least.

Thanks for reading.
