I'll Be Good Lyrics
I thought I saw the devil this morning
Looking in the mirror
Drop of rum on my tongue with a warning
To help me see myself clearer
I never meant to start a fire
I never meant to make you bleed
I'll be a better man today
I'll be good, I'll be good
And I'll love the world like I should
I'll be good, I'll be good
For all of the times that I never could
My past has tasted bitter for years now, so I wield an iron fist
Grace is just weakness, or so I've been told
I've been cold, I've been merciless
But the blood on my hands scares me to death
Maybe I'm waking up today
I'll be good, I'll be good
And I'll love the world like I should
I'll be good, I'll be good
For all of the light that I shut out
For all of the innocent things that I doubt
For all of the bruises I've caused and the tears
For all of the things that I've done
All these years
For all of the sparks that I stomped out
For all of the perfect things that I doubt
I'll be good, I'll be good
And I'll love the world like I should
I'll be good, I'll be good
For all of the times that I never could
Looking in the mirror
Drop of rum on my tongue with a warning
To help me see myself clearer
I never meant to make you bleed
I'll be a better man today
And I'll love the world like I should
I'll be good, I'll be good
For all of the times that I never could
Grace is just weakness, or so I've been told
I've been cold, I've been merciless
But the blood on my hands scares me to death
Maybe I'm waking up today
And I'll love the world like I should
I'll be good, I'll be good
For all of the innocent things that I doubt
For all of the bruises I've caused and the tears
For all of the things that I've done
All these years
For all of the sparks that I stomped out
For all of the perfect things that I doubt
And I'll love the world like I should
I'll be good, I'll be good
For all of the times that I never could

Jaymes Young: ”This video represents the harm we do. We harm ourselves when we harm others. It also reflects the re-birth of a forgiven conscience.”
'I thought I saw the devil this morning, looking in the mirror-' This is how I'll Be Good starts out. This part of the song means that when Jaymes was looking in the mirror, he saw himself as the devil, someone who was always mean and hurt others. 'I never meant to start a fire, I never meant to make you bleed, I'll be a better man today-' This means that Jaymes never meant to hurt anybody, he was just so used to being himself that he never noticed he was hurting others until recently. Now that he knows what he's doing, he wants to become a better person. 'I'll be good, I'll be good, and I'll love the world like I should-' The chorus is literally explaining that Jaymes wants to be better, that he's trying to be better, and that he's trying to be a good person. The second verse explains why he was acting the way he was and why he was being so mean. The part between the end of the second chorus and the last chorus is Jaymes saying all of the things he had done wrong that he wanted to fix.
