This song is about someone that isn't in love with the singer. He is totally, completely in love with her, but she doesn't feel the same way and the boy knows that. Even though she pretends to feel this love, it's clear that she's the same around everyone, but he can't help but feel as if she's the one, and can't let go of her.
I feel like this song is about a singer being in love with a girl but the girl doesn't like him, she just pretends and the guy knows. But he doesn't regret falling for her and he knows that she would tell her friends everything, "you would turn it on for everyone you met"

i think its about the writer loving someone, but they only loved them for a short time, or 'used them'.

That is, similar to fool's gold .... looks like gold, feels like gold, but it is not (now interchange the term gold with love).

Makes me think about this girl I know. I really like her but the chances of me ending up with her are slim. I keep thinking about giving up on the dream but I won't be able to face the regret associated with failure. She doesn't mirror the same feelings towards me. Even if I don't end up with her, I still won't regret meeting her because she is still one of the best things that have showed up in my life.
