Trusty And True Lyrics

We've wanted to be trusty and true
But feathers fell from our wings
And we wanted to be worthy of you
But weather rained on our dreams

And we can't take back what is done, what is past
So fellas, lay down your fears
'Cos we can't take back what is done, what is past
So let us start from here

'Cause we never wanted to be lusty and lewd
Nor tethered to prudish strongs
And we never wanted to be jealously tuned
Nor withered into ugly things

So we can't take back what is done what is past
So fellas, lay down your spears
'Cause we can't take back what is done what is past
So let us start from here

And if all that you are is not all you desire then come...

Come, come alone, come with fear, come with love, come however you are
Just come, come alone, come with friends, come with foes
Come however you are, just come, come let yourself be wrong
Come, it's already begun, come alone, come with me, then let go, come however you are, just come
Come alone, come so carefully closed, come however you are, just come....

Come, come along, come with sorrows and song
Come however you are, just come....
Come along, come let yourself be wrong
Come however you are...
Just come

this is a beautiful song. so simple, but such beautiful imagery. And a celebration of the diversity of human relationships - just come as you are (and let yourself be wrong). We just don't hear that enough!!!

I wonder was this inspired by people writing to him about how much his music meant to them?

My Interpretation

if only all people were so welcoming.

@blue412 I think he's singing this song to Lisa, I think most of the songs on this album are addressed to Lisa. They've spent a long time apart and he just really wants her back in his life, in any form, he just wants to see and talk to her again. They can't erase the past but they can start something, anything; they can be lovers or friends or acquaintances, he's beckoning her to enter his life again. Just come.

I think this is, in part, addressed to God, or whatever supreme being or thought you happen to believe in.

It's an admission of guilt but a plea; we tried our best, it hasn't quite worked, can we start again please?

why continue to live ugly versions of ourselves, ones we never wanted to become, because of our past or situations we've been through? this song is about letting go of those hangups and moving on, accepting that those things are in the past and we should move forward. you won't be alone.

I just saw Damien Rice in concert. He explained that this song is about letting go of regret. He remembers his Grandfather laying on his death bed before he spoke of the things in his life that he wished he could take back. The thought of waiting until the end of your life to face your regrets seemed terrible. He wanted to people to hear this song and let go of all the things they regret and start fresh now. Shed the baggage of regret now before its too late and don't be held down by the weight that regret can have on you.
