The Morning After Lyrics

I couldn't sleep last night
There were lions and bears tearing you from my side
I couldn't sleep last night
How you look like my daughter
It's burnt in my mind

And I can't feel anything the morning after you
And I can't tell anyone the morning after you

I couldn't sleep last night
You were chasing the birds 'till the beast caught your eye
I couldn't sleep last night
How you look like an angel
It's burnt in my mind

I can't feel anything the morning after you
I can't tell anyone the morning after you

And I hope you sleep with the marigold
I hope you win it this time
And I pray you don't fear the animals
I'll save you, I promise this time

I couldn't sleep last night
There were lions and bears tearing you from my side
I couldn't sleep last night
How you look like my daughter
It's burned in my mind

I can't feel anything the morning after you
I would give anything

For some reason, this song strikes me as having to do with a miscarriage or abortion when she mentions "how you look like my daughter / it's burned in my mind". As for the "lions and bears" part: lions are well-known to kill the young of any previous leader of the pride, and male bears are known to kill their own young if the mama bear doesn't protect them.

When she says "I hope you sleep with a marigold" it further supports the idea of the loss of a child; in Mexico, the marigold is known as the flower of the dead, and it is also symbolic of grief and pain (i.e., the mourning of a lost daughter).

My Interpretation

@nemoman definitely got the miscarriage vibe. No abortion regret/sorrow like Ben Folds' "Brick." Seems like she's recovering from the loss and optimistic about the future, but still hurting.

My first impression was that her boyfriend or husband, the father of her child, died somehow. Her daughter is growing to look a lot like her father. She hopes that wherever he may be that he doesn't fear it, but finds peace in it sleeping among the marigolds (flower of the dead). In her dreams she tries save him, wakes up numb the next morning and cannot talk to anyone about it. She would give anything to have him back.

I think this song is either about a miscarriage, abortion, or rape I saw someone mention it as rape before Instead of "how you look like my daughter, it's burned in my mind" it could be "how 'You look like my daughter' it's burned in my mind" Same goes with the " 'how you look like an angel' it's burned in my mind" This could be about a girl who got raped by someone she cared about, hence why she says she'll save them, but by saying "And I hope you sleep with a merrygold" she's implying that she also wants them dead because of what they did to her I would really love for Meg to explain why she wrote it and what it represents

I´d say the song is about the father of her daughter. It seems like he either left her or died, the cause however seems to be based outside their relationship. It´s possible that he was dragged into something or did smoething dangerous as in "You were chasing the birds, till the beast caught your eye". So the lions and bears doesn´t have to have a deeper meaning, it could just well be predators. As she still talks about the morning after, this could refer to the person having changed so much, being unrecognizable for her while there are still feelings from the time prior to the change. In this context "i hope you sleep with the merry gold", could mean the person is dead in here eyes. In the end it´s all about the tragedy of not being able to stop the change in that person but still loving him.

My Interpretation

This song is about love, addiction, heartbreak and death. She is involved with a man she loves so much she can picture what their kids were to look like if they had some or they do have a daughter and she looks more like her father. "You were chasing a bird till the beast caught your eye." Her lover developed a drug addiction and couldn't stop. eventually he overdoses ends up in a coma. She can't get the image of him like that out of her head "how you look like an angel it's burned in my mind" Finding out he won't ever wake up from it she tells herself she will be right there next to him holding his hand when doctors shut off the life support machines and he dies "I'll hold you when it is time" (I think the lyric "I hope u win it this time" is incorrect it's hold you when it is time) And she prays that he will be ok in death. She feels like no matter what she did she couldn't save him from his drug addiction so she will let him go saving him from his current circumstances. After he's gone shes heartbroken and numb she can't talk about him or how she's feeling to anyone because the pain of it would be unbearable. At the end of the song she says I would give anything then stops she would give anything to have him back
