California Rain Lyrics
We won't build a home
You won't buy flowers every Monday
Or call on my birthday
I'm not the first
And I won't be the last to love you
And I do
I love it when you're lonely
That's when we feel the same
You come around
You let me down
Like California rain
How many times
Will midnight come and go without so much
As a single touch?
How many times
Will I find solace in the worst of you?
'Cuz I do
I love it when you're lonely
That's when we feel the same
I come around
I let you down
Like California rain
I love it when you're lonely
'Cuz that's what I feel the same
You come around
You let me down
My California rain
You won't buy flowers every Monday
Or call on my birthday
I'm not the first
And I won't be the last to love you
And I do
That's when we feel the same
You come around
You let me down
Like California rain
Will midnight come and go without so much
As a single touch?
How many times
Will I find solace in the worst of you?
'Cuz I do
That's when we feel the same
I come around
I let you down
Like California rain
'Cuz that's what I feel the same
You come around
You let me down
My California rain

Ugh, it's haunting how much I'm currently connecting to this song right now. To me, this transcends a "breakup" song. For me, there's sort of an admission that there's no future in the pairing for the long term at the beginning of the song, but there's a comfort in having that common ground of heartbreak.
I've often observed in a breakup, that one of the partners no longer feels the same for the other, even though that partner's view remains the same. There's a disconnect.
With this relationship, putting it bluntly, I feel that there's a satisfaction gained from the karma the other partner ends up experiencing with a similar heartbreak. Not from a vengeful perspective, but because there's mutual understanding how one another is feeling, and ideally, there's a possibility that each can be there for the other to heal. In part, it's why it's so hard, if not impossible to end it. And neither side wants to. May not make sense to everyone... but that's how I see it.
