First Class Lyrics

Say we’ll get married on a porch in Vegas
We can get hitched and have a couple of kids
And none of them will look at all like us, and our neighbors will all be a bit too much
And you’ll live out in the desert with a man you never loved

Is this it?
What you want?
What you wanted?
Do you need love?
Am I enough for you?
In time you’ll find I’ve got my baggage too

Say we’ll get famous and we’ll die with our names
In every paper, every news report is any consolation
To the people that you love and all the people that you hate
But will love you all the same because you’re beautiful

Say you didn’t see it, that I saw right through you
Say you didn’t mean it that I mean nothing to you
Like you said
Do you believe me?
That I’ll be right for you
Say you love me like you used to

We were born playing in the wreckage
Buried down on birds with stones
Bore my weight upon your shoulders
Water as warm as morning suns
I don’t think quite like I used to
I got a bed to call my own
I see stars and painted lies
Broken glass upon your road
Now I’m driving home too soon

Woah woah
Say you love me like you used to

And we’ll vacation first class
I’m breaking your fall
You’re breaking my ass
You’re working all day
Hating on all the bitches at work
You say you’re ok
You’re faking, fucked up
Drinking all day, you give me a cup
And I’ll be damned if we can make it out of this alive, baby

I say I’ll be damned if we can make it out of this alive
But is this what you want?
What you wanted?
Do you need love?
Am I enough for you?
In time you’ll find I’ve got my baggage too

Oh and say we’ll get famous and we’ll die with our names
In every paper, every news report is any consolation
To the people that you love and all the people that you hate
But we’ll love you all the same because you’re beautiful

Say you didn’t see it, that I saw right through you
Say you didn’t mean it that I mean nothing to you
Like you said do you believe me?
That I’ll be right for you
Say you love me like you used to

Woah
Say you love me like you used to

And we’ll vacation first class
I’m breaking your fall
You’re breaking my ass
You’re working all day
Hating on all the bitches at work
You say you’re ok
You’re faking
Fucked up!
Drinking all day, you give me a cup
And I’ll be damned if we can make it out of this alive, baby!

I say I’ll be damned if we can make it out of this alive

But is this what you want?
What you wanted?
Do you need love?
Am I enough for you?
In time you’ll find I’ve got my baggage too

Say we’ll get married on a porch in Vegas
We can get hitched and have a couple of kids

The song is a beautifully worded explanation of why love doesn't always win. It's about needing validation of reciprocated love. I dont think that she doesn't love him, he can just tell that she is unhappy. In the beginning of relationships everything seems perfect But as time goes on and we learn more about one another we discover intolerable baggage. The Awful Truth is that love isn't enough to make us happy. We stay because our hearts speak louder than our heads.

I think this is about a man who wants a woman in his life but he feels like he isn't good enough for her when they get together. He thinks about getting together in the beginning, and then through the chorus with "is this what you want?" And "Am I enough for you?" He's struggling to feel like he's enough for her.

My Interpretation

@WoodenDragon Thank you for this inspiring text it really helped me to suit in my actual situation. Just thank you.

@EricHill No problem man. I hope everything's alright for you.

Song always feels good when you can relate to it.

The song is about the desire for validation of reciprocated love. Also, it's a beautifully worded explanation of why love doesn't always win. I dont think that she DOESN'T love him, necessarily. He only feels unloved because he can see she is unhappy. He talks about his idea of a picture perfect relationship and fears that she doesn't want the same things. In the beginning of a relationship everything seems perfect But as time goes on and we learn more about each other then we sometimes discover intolerable baggage. He Compares their relationship to birds that can't fly because sometimes we are stuck a relationship that is stagnant but we stay because our hearts speak louder than our heads. The awful truth is that love isnt enough to make you happy.

My take on this is that, from the partner who is signing’s perspective (Person A), this other person (Person B) who is depressed, comes from a hard life/broken background, is stuck in a life and job they hate, surrounded by people they despise. Person B thinks that their cynicism and rejection of everyone around them makes them hard or untouchable. But really, Person B is just a scared addict (alcohol) either numbing themselves or lashing out. But Person A still sees something so special about Person B, that Person B can’t see for themselves. Person A wants to whisk Person B off to a better life, with the house/kids/trips, the whole idyllic life; Person A is basically begging Person B to put love before self loathing, but Person B can’t. They are stuck, perpetually unhappy, bringing everyone around them down too. And Person A realizes that the offer of the wonderful life is actually just their own dream that they have to let go of.

@yarrowXyarrow oh, and Person A realizes that Person B will eventually leave this life without anyone ever really know who Person B is

@yarrowXyarrow wow I was really wrong with the above comment. So… Person A thinks they belong w Person B, which could be true but Person B is set in their path. Person B is trying to be someone they aren’t, probs engaged to the looks good on paper” person. There is love between Person A and Person B, but Person B won’t forgo what’s expected of them, even though they are unhappy.

Damn.
