Daughter of a dove
keeps me

I have found a love
among the thorns

Breakwater to the sea
keeps me

There is an aging arm
Across a naked waste
There is a fallen tree
Against a perfect January snow

And that's as spiritual as I need to be
That's as spiritual as I need to be

We all know safety
is a blessing and a curse
Like Mary's baby
staring back up at Mary

So when they said,
"Turn up the kick drum,
turn up the snare."
I turned around to see my baby
Put the flower in her hair
Now I'm doing flips
off the edge of the pool
Sophomore, junior, fool

The things I do
and the things I say
I know they're more than just a little
away from each other
more than just a little away
But people,
I've been operating
under the impression
that that's OK

When all of your heroes
have had their sons
And all of your heroes
have had their daughters
And all of your heroes
have left you
And all you have left is
all of this water
Well all you can do
all you can do
is secure your bird heart
and sail towards the edge
But I am just an arm
hanging in the sun
and that's as spiritual as I know how to be
and that's as spiritual as I know how to be
and I said
I am just an arm
hanging in the sun
where the daughter of a dove
keeps me

So when they said,
"Turn up the kick drum,
turn up the snare."
I turned away to see my baby
put the flower in her hair
Now I'm just crossing shit off my list
at the edge of the pool
Five, four, three, two
One thing a wise man would do is
Waste away
but the
one thing that I'm going to do is
take a name
and my name is the babe
my name is the babe
my name is the babe
my name is the babe

Breakwater to the sea
that's as spiritual as I need to be
Breakwater to the sea
that's as spiritual as I need to be
Breakwater to the sea
that's as spiritual, as spiritual as I need to be
The daughter of a dove keeps me
Break, breakwater to the sea
Just strong enough to hold back the waves
as they roll in, roll in, roll in, roll in
and I should've told you sooner
I'll be relying on you, baby
and I should've told you sooner
I think you're just like me
and I guess I should've told you
sometimes I'm just an arm
just another arm
hanging out a window on the highway in the sun
or a fallen tree against a January snowbank
or a break, break, break, breakwater to the sea
breakwater to the sea
that's as spiritual as I need to be
the daughter of a dove keeps me
break, breakwater to the sea
breakwater to the sea
that's as spiritual as I need to be
the daughter of a dove keeps me

Absolutely breathtaking song. Makes me wish I didn't give up on piano lessons as a kid.... Oh well, I'll live vicariously through Mr. Krug.

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
