Back When My Hair Was Short (1972 Version) Lyrics
Back when my hair was short
I was a white sock sport
Only beer parties till three
College appealed to me
Eastern philosophy
Feeding my mind LSD THC STP
I was into a heavy scene
Reading "Screw" magazine
Seeing three concerts a week
An honest to God hippie freak
Too busy eating to speak
Except about love
(Lo-o-o-o-o-o-ove)
I knew all kinds of love
Love of a man for his brother
And love to rip off one another
While screaming "Right on!"
Back when my hair was short
Before I'd been to court
For selling dope to some kids
Mm-mm
Only a couple of lids
They stood around and made bids
And talked about love
(Lo-o-o-o-o-o-ove)
They were experts on love
Love of a man for his vision
And love to make no real decision
When they're called upon
Soon when my hair is short
I'll make a full report
Of how I came back alive
(Came back, came back alive)
And what it takes to survive
Wringing the truth out of jive
I'll tell you of love
(Lo-o-o-o-o-o-ove)
I've seen all kinds of love
Love of a man for his neighbor
And love to put nails in your savior
Then cry when he's gone
I was a white sock sport
Only beer parties till three
College appealed to me
Eastern philosophy
Feeding my mind LSD THC STP
Reading "Screw" magazine
Seeing three concerts a week
An honest to God hippie freak
Too busy eating to speak
(Lo-o-o-o-o-o-ove)
I knew all kinds of love
Love of a man for his brother
And love to rip off one another
While screaming "Right on!"

i’ve always recalled this one from some k-tel compilation from the 70s, but only recently did i bother to look for it and only today did i listen carefully enough to hear the lyrics for the first time. \nthey’re not what i thought they were. they’re absolutely hilarious. out simply, the name roasts the status quo coming out of those early 70s, particularly the pretentiousness and ultimate hypocrisy of those on both sides or all sides of that era’s cultural divides, especially when it comes to not even seein the most basic and important matters of all, love. love and letting others be so that we ourselves can just be as we are, all of us free to find our own love and happiness.\ngreat lyrics, packed with fine little turns that sum up bigger themes, great production and beautiful harmonies make this one a bit more than whatever you might call a one-hit wonder.
