Since this was on the super deluxe version of New Traditionalists, I'm assuming it was from those sessions. Anyway, the song is about how a lot of people were led to believe that if they did well and studied hard, they'd go places in life. However, they left out one crucial element - you also have to know the right people. Those that didn't know the right people were stuck with being the low man on the totem pole.
