Runaway Lyrics
Hmhmhmhm ah ah
Hmhmhmhm ah ah
Hmhmhmhm ah ah
Hmhmhmhm ah ah
I've known it for a long time
Daddy wakes up to a drink at night
Disappearing all night
I don’t wanna know where he's been lying
I know what I wanna do
I wanna runaway
Runaway with you
Gonna grab clothes, socks, in the morning, go
"How long you leaving?"
"Well Dad just don’t expect me back this evening.
Oh it could take a bit of time to heal this"
It’s been a long day
Almost out of the wrong way but
I love him from the skin to my bones, ah
But I don’t wanna miss home, ah
There’s nothing to say 'cause he knows, ah
I’ll just runaway and be on my own
I’ve never seen my dad cry
Cold as stone, and the kitchen light
I tell you it's about time
But I was raised to keep quiet
And this is what I’m gonna do
Gonna runaway, gonna make that move
Gonna grab clothes, and when it’s morning, go
"How long you leaving?"
"Well Dad just don’t expect me back this evening.
Oh it could take a bit of time to heal this"
It’s been a long day
Almost out of the wrong way but
I love him from the skin to my bones, ah
But I don’t wanna miss home, ah
There’s nothing to say 'cause he knows, ah
I’ll just runaway and be on my own
Back pack, and a flat cap, turned to the back
'Cause I packed my clothes up
My dad wasn’t in with that plan too bit tired and turns to show up
I don’t wanna live this way
Gonna take my things and go
If things change in a matter of days
Could be persuaded to hold up
And mama was the same
None of us are saints
I guess that God knows that
I don’t wanna runaway
And one of these days I might just show that
Put my home in a suitcase
Tie both shoelaces, and hold that
Things change, but for now I leave town with a backpack on my shoulder
I love him from the skin to my bones, ah
But I don’t wanna miss home, ah
There’s nothing to say 'cause he knows, ah
I’ll just runaway and be on my own

the song is about a girlfriend/friend who he wants to "runaway" with.
Is he running away to meet up with this girl? Is their relationship forbidden?
I'm pretty sure this song is from the perspective of a girl who has a bad relationship with her mother, so she tells her father that's she's going to run away from home. It upsets her father when she does runaway and she cares about him, but feels she needs to leave.
first off a bunch of lyrics are wrong but i'll correct as i go
'I've known it for a long time Daddy wakes up to a drink at 9 Disappearing all night I don’t wanna know where he's been lying I know what I wanna do I wanna runaway Runaway with you Gonna grab clothes, socks, in the morning, go'
Assuming it's written in the prospective of Ed, his father is an alcoholic and he's known it for a while now. When his father goes out drinking he doesn't come back until the morning and Ed doesn't want to think about what he's been getting into. One day he makes up his mind that he's going to run away with a friend or girlfriend.
'"How long you leaving?" "Well Dad just don’t expect me back this evening. Oh it could take a bit of time to heal this" It’s been a long day thumb out, side of the roadway but I love him from the skin to my bones, ah but i don't want to live in his home, ah There’s nothing to say 'cause he knows, ah I’ll just runaway and be on my own'
As Ed is walking out his father asks him how long he'll be out and Ed responds with I don't know but it will be a while because there as too many things wrong with their relationship. Now Ed is on the side of the road with his thumb out, hitchhiking and he's explaining to us that he loves his father but he needs o get out of that toxic environment. When he left his father didn't try to stop him because he knew why he why he's leaving and he'd rather Ed be with his friend than completely alone
I’ve never seen my dad cry Cold as stone in the kitchen light I tell you it's about time But I was raised to keep quiet And this is what I’m gonna do Gonna runaway, gonna make that move Gonna grab clothes, and when it’s morning, go
This is going back to that talk in the kitchen right before he left. When he told his dad he was leaving, he started crying. Ed had never seen his father express emotion, he's always been 'cold as stone' to Ed. Ed thought to himself, 'well its about time you act like a person. where was this when i was growing up?' but he doesn't say it out loud because he was raised to respect his elders and hold his tongue. Again he is explaining to his dad that he has to leave.
Back pack, and a flat cap, turned to the back 'Cause I packed my clothes My dad wasn’t down with that plan to attack intends to show love I don’t wanna live this way Gonna take my things and go If things change in a matter of days Could be persuaded to hold up And mama was the same None of us are saints I guess that God knows that I don’t wanna runaway And one of these days I might just show that Put my home in a suitcase Tie both shoelaces, and hope that Things change, but for now I leave town with a backpack on my shoulder
Ed is describing his outfit he wore that day. Then goes on to say that his father didn't like his plan and he didn't want Ed to leave so he tried to show him love instead of fighting with him about it.But even that wasnt enough to keep Ed at home because he knows how his father really is. If his father could magically become this loving caring father for real then MAYBE he would stay. Ed goes on to explain that his mother is just like his dad so he can't go live with her. He's saying everyone has their demons and no one is perfect but God knows it. He doesn't want to runaway and he's hoping that one day he can have a relationship with his father but for now its best that he packs his bag and leaves
