Fucked My Way Up to the Top Lyrics

Life is awesome, I confess,
What I do, I do best,
You got nothing, I got tested,
And I'm the best, yes,
Lay me down tonight in my linen and curls,
Lay me down tonight, Riviera girls

I fucked my way up to the top,
This is my show,
I fucked my way up to the top,
Go baby go,
Go, go, go, go, go,
This is my show,
Go, go, go, go, go,
This is my show

I'm a dragon, you're a whore,
Don't even know what you're good for,
Mimicking me is a fucking bore to me,
But babe,
Lay me down tonight in my diamonds and pearls,
Tell me songs at night 'bout your favorite girl

I fucked my way up to the top,
This is my show,
I fucked my way up to the top,
Go baby go,
Go, go, go, go, go
This is my show,
Go, go, go, go, go
This is my show

Need you baby, like I breath you baby,
Need you baby more, more, more, more
Need you baby, like I breath you baby,
Fucking need you baby more, more, more, more

Lay me down tonight in my linen and pearls,
Lay me down tonight, I'm you're favorite girl

I fucked my way up to the top,
This is my show,
I fucked my way up to the top,
Go baby go,
Go, go, go, go, go,
This is my show,
Go, go, go, go, go,
This is my show

Need you baby, like I breath you baby,
I need you baby more, more, more, more
Need you baby, like I breath you baby

So here's why it's unfortunately about Lorde

Life is awesome, I confess

  • Responding to Lorde's criticism of portraying a glamorous lifestyle that no one can relate to. She confesses it's awesome. Well, she lives it now so she knows.

Lay me down tonight In my linen and curls Lay me down tonight Riviera girls -The "Lay me down tonight in my linen and curls" line could possibly be a reference to Lorde's young age, like she has to be put to bed like a baby. -Also, Lana is being sarcastic by saying diamonds and pearls and linen and curls; all these items are attributed to wealthiness, while Lorde was frustrated with the Lavish lifestlye Lana portrays

What I do, I do it best You got nothing, I got tested And I passed, yes

  • In the game of alternative female pop singers, Lana professes that she does it best, and this amplified by the fact that she is successful even despite being "tested." She passed the test of public scrutiny, while Lorde didn't because she was immediately successful.

I fucked my way up to the top This is my show

  • Like it or not, kinda of a "nanana boo boo" in the face of Lorde's feminist message

Don't even know what you're good for Mimicking me is a fucking bore to me The significance of the hip-hop sound of this song...it drives this one particular point home. Hip-hop influence is important here, something she and Lorde share. The strangled loon (or is it a baboon sound) that happens at least twice in FMWUTTT also strengthens the reference to the hip hop influence of her previous record, which Lorde blatantly copied on her own album.

Need you, baby, like I breathe you, baby Need you, baby, more more more more -This part is mocking Lorde's particular gripe with "Without You", this is what Lorde said: "She’s great, but I listened to that Lana Del Rey record and the whole time I was just thinking it’s so unhealthy for young girls to be listening to, you know: “I’m nothing without you.” This sort of shirt-tugging, desperate, don’t leave me stuff. That’s not a good thing for young girls, even young people, to hear." This line portrays exactly that desperation that Lorde was complaining about.

Thanks creyk. I agree with your interpretation.

About Lorde?

yes

My Opinion

I think this song is about Lana losing her virginity to Axl Rose.

The line that gives it away most is "Lay me down tonight in my linen and curls" because when they went out to dinner that one time, she was wearing linen and her hair was wavy (aka curls)

Also she probably got tested for STDs because Axl Rose probably has some because he is a rockstar.

@geniusbetch Lana met him when she was like 27? And she was never really the example of a "pure" teenager, you know.

This song is about an artist who basically mocked Lana, and then later copied her style. I don't think it's Lorde, because to me it seems highly unlikely that Lana would call a 17 year old girl a whore. I heard it's about Taylor Swift, but that's just a rumor.

Also, to the top comment, I giggled. While the interpretation is interesting, Lana only met Axl a few years ago, she definitely hasn't been a virgin for awhile so it's pretty unlikely that she lost her virginity to him.

I think this song is about Lizzy Grant a.k.a herself. In this case, Lana impersonates Lizzy and sings about her own alter ego. She said in some interview that it was about "an artist who mocked her and now uses her style and is a success". Lana is always very critical about her work and now she finally is making it to the top.

"You got nothing, I got tested, and I'm the best, yes." - Lana Del Rey achieved the spotlights and her dreams while Lizzy Grant is now in the shadows. Even though Lana was always very critic towards her own work.

"I fucked my way up to the top, this is my show, I fucked my way up to the top...Go baby go" - The chorus seems to be about another interview where she stated she had a relationship with a businessman involved with the music industry, and the reflection of this in the media outlets. They make Lana the persona they want to be.

"I'm a dragon, you're a whore, don't even know what you're good for, mimicking me is a fucking bore to me." - Now that she's the best she doesn't need to look back to the past. Mimicking her own style is boring and tiring.

"Need you baby, like I breath you baby" - Even though she wants to put that behind, she can't - Lizzy needs Lana as much Lana needs Lizzy Grant. Her past is her past, and it's a part of her being. She needs it like she needs to breath.

This song is a great example of satire and self reference on the album. It really got my attention the first time I read the title and from that moment it passed through my mind this would be some kind of inside joke. It really works, and it's a pretty great way to take it at her detractors with her OWN image.

Lana said that this song talks about how she used to sleep with label manager to get music contracts. "fucked my way up to the top" resumes pretty well what she meant

She also said that sleeping around with guys in the music business did not help her in getting a record deal : /
