In Our Prime Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Pour me down the drain, I disappear
Like every honest thing I used to hear
[Chorus]
Like every lover hovers in my mind
We made our mark when we were in our prime
The house it burned, but nothing there was mine
We had it all when we were in our prime
[Verse 2]
Every now and then I see your face from way back when and I explode
Friends no longer egg me on, they bullshit serenade me like it's gold, how then we're told
I'm praying for some laughter, maybe joy for ever after till I die
I'm hungry for a change, I got my fill of other's pain, I realized, opened my eyes
[Chorus x2]
Like every lover hovers in my mind
We made our mark when we were in our prime
The house it burned, but nothing there was mine
We had it all when we were in our prime
Pour me down the drain, I disappear
Like every honest thing I used to hear
Like every lover hovers in my mind
We made our mark when we were in our prime
The house it burned, but nothing there was mine
We had it all when we were in our prime
Every now and then I see your face from way back when and I explode
Friends no longer egg me on, they bullshit serenade me like it's gold, how then we're told
I'm praying for some laughter, maybe joy for ever after till I die
I'm hungry for a change, I got my fill of other's pain, I realized, opened my eyes
Like every lover hovers in my mind
We made our mark when we were in our prime
The house it burned, but nothing there was mine
We had it all when we were in our prime

Degradation of a relationship and being fed up with issues and problems of life
Dan's been through a lot, can see it in this album for sure
The house it burned, but nothing there was mine" the relationship came to an end but he no longer had feelings to care?
This is my favorite Black Keys song of all time, and God is it so amazing and criminally underrated. Dan wrote the songs for Turn Blue when Dan was going through a very rough and bitter divorce with his first wife, and I think this song and a lot of the other songs on this album really reflects his emotions he felt during the time, but it's definitely at it's strongest in this song and Weight of Love imo.
Pertaining to the meaning of this song, I think mostly Dan is reflecting on and lamenting a better time, when they were in their prime, or when things were at their best before it went sour, and he's saying that those days are long gone, they already made their mark a long time ago. He feels like friends no longer try to help him out or encourage him but just tell him or try to lead him to believe everything is fine or good when it's not, or either that tell him the same thing over and over again (bullshit serenade) and he's just tired of carrying the weight on his own, constantly hoping for a better time.
I'm not exactly sure what the chorus means. Like every (other's?) love that hovers in my mind, I think what that means is he's seeing other people's success in relationships and comparing it to what they had when they were at their best or what they could of had, or it could mean that the memories of their prime continually haunt him. The house it burned but nothing there was mine, is more than likely a reference to an accusation Dan made against his ex wife during their divorce that she tried to set fire to their house, but I think what someone else said on here might be accurate, that everything they had burned down, but in the end, he can just no longer care anymore.
Then the guitar solo on this is just fucking gold. It literally sounds like just giving up, because everything is too fucked up to try anymore, and it just steadily fades out, just like his love for his wife and what he used to have, and eventually his motivation goes with it. Good God you can just feel the pull and tugs of the strings as he's playing the solo and it just hits so hard in the feels. Amazing song.
