Turn Blue Lyrics

In the dead of the night I start to lose control
But i still carry the weight like I've always done before
It gets so heavy at times but what more can i do
I gotta stay on track just like pops told me to

I really don't think you know
There could be hell below, below
I really do hope you know
There could be hell below, below

When the music is done and and all the lights are low
I would remember the times when love would really glow
I could dream ahead before my world turned blue
And the light inside would only shine for you

I really don't think you know
There could be hell below, below
I really do hope you know
There could be hell below, below
I really don't think you know
There could be hell below, below

I'm REALLY surprised there are no any comments to this song! Here's what I thought: Well first, in an interview Dan has openly said that this album has a "moody" feel to it, having alot of emotions from the divorce he had with his wife. I think this song could symbolize his marriage, but who knows, and that's the great thing about lyrics!

"In the dead of the night I start to lose control But i still carry the weight like I've always done before" -The person keeps fighting with their partner, but they brush it off and pretends like it didn't happen. And hope it will go away sooner or later

"When the music is done and and all the lights are low" -I think this is a metaphor between a song in a concert that finishes and the lights are still low even though the concert's probably over. This could be like a relationship where the love is sort of gone, but they're not sure if they should end it or what to do.

"I would remember the times when love would really glow" -He is reminiscing over the times when the relationship was great and they didn't have problems.

"I could dream ahead before my world turned blue And the light inside would only shine for you" -He would think about the future of them being together up until it started to get bad. He would pretend like there weren't any problems and was forcing the love in the relationship even though he felt like something was wrong in it. He just didn't want to end it for specific reasons.

So that's my two cents. I made an account just to comment on this so hopefully other people comment on it to! :)

My Interpretation

@urbane I'd like to add that the chorus about how "there could be hell below" is a bit vindictive, but regretful at the same time. I think he is anxious that some kind of punishment exists for whoever broke his heart, and they don't know that it's coming. Perhaps if they knew what was in store for them, they wouldn't have done it in the first place :(

@catan11580 ya that was the only part i didn't real understand, but now that i look at it it could mean that the other person doesn't realize how angry they make him and that the person might've forgotten there's a place (hell) for people who treat others like that.

I think urbane is right on some counts, and to continue with this:

"I gotta stay on track just like pops told me to do"

The singer is trying to focus on the other aspects of his life and involves his father in order to make themselves feel better about staying in the relationship. They have more important things to worry about than their relationship.

"I really don't think you know There could be hell below, below I really do hope you know There could be hell below, below"

seems to point towards someone trying to tell him the relationship is turning sour and other people can see it. Continuing on this way could lead to hell for the singer as the relationship enters a downward spiral of negative emotion.
