Artifice Lyrics

Is it over?
Did it end while I was gone?
'Cause my shoulders
Couldn't hold that weight for long
And it all just feels the same

Somebody better let me know my name
Before I give myself away
Somebody better show me how I feel
'Cause I know I'm not at the wheel

Is it over?
Did the last thread come undone?
'Cause I told ya
I didn't wanna hurt no one
But the faces are all the same

Somebody better let me know my name
Before I give myself away
Somebody better show me how I feel
'Cause I know I'm not at the wheel

Somebody better let me know my name
Before I give myself away
Somebody better show me how I feel
'Cause I know I'm not at the wheel

Somebody better let me know my name
Before I give myself away
Somebody better show me how I feel
'Cause I know I'm not at the wheel

Cover art for Artifice lyrics by SOHN

I see the overall topic of this song as a cry for identity before you give your life to something (or someone). More specifically the need for identity in a time filled with education, morals and fwith people urging you to do something with yourself. But what do you want?

The song starts with the words "is it over? did it end while i was gone?" as if the person has been away. "cause my shoulders couldn't hold that weight for long, and it all just feels the same". It's like he/she needed a break from the pressure and came back to find the world still running the same direction.

The chorus pretty much sums up the concerns from the person here: "Somebody better let me know my name, before i give myself away". It kinda sounds ironic as an answer to opinions of other people like "you need to be like this, you need to do that," and the "name" in the song might be the identity of a person which is like all those things combined. "Somebody better show me how I feel, Cause I know I'm not at the wheel" suggests a psychological approach towards feeling better about oneself. The person in question is not fully aware of how to feel about stuff, probably because of the many opnions and pressuring variable in the daily life and news. Someone might be able to guide this person, which is what this person probably needs: an objective point of view.

Second verse needs some correcting from "Did it last or come undone" to "did the last thread come undone". Easily heard when you listen closely to the lyrics. ;)

Once again he/she asks "is it over" and the before mentioned sentence^ Something needed a small push to fully be over or understood. My thought is it could be something like the person leaving or being in a problematic state, because the next sentence says "cause i told ya, i didn't wanna hurt noone but the faces are all the same" like he/she understands the fact that someone probably could be hurt right now or maybe they understand the state the person is in and has accepted it. Somehow the main person here finds it problematic to differentiate between "faces" or maybe just people in generel. kinda like "you all try to do the same, but who are "you"?". Perhaps insinuating the person don't see people trying to be themselves and that makes it harder for him/her to find main characteristics in him/herself?

The 3 choruses in the last part is just repetition that repeats the main problems of this person. Maybe like a cry for help? Or sometimes just to underline that.

My Interpretation

@nicolai go i Forgot for the chorus: My interpretation of "before i give myself away" is in the start of what I wrote. :)
