Coffee Lyrics

True, it's a dance, we know the moves
The bow, the dip, the woo
Though the words are true
The state is old news

Wrap me in your arms
I can't feel it, but
Rock me in your arms
I can't feel it, but

Get up, get down
Get up, get down
Feel the turn and rotation
And stop, see the next one waitin'
Get up, get down
Get up, get down
Get up
Sentiment's the same, but the pair of feet change

I know my woes will dry upon the skin
Just like a name I remember hearing
Wild winter, warm coffee
Mom's gone, do you love me?
Blazing summer, cold coffee
Baby's gone, do you love me?

Wrap me in your arms
I can't feel it, but
Rock me in your arms
I can't feel it, but

Get up, get down
Get up, get down
Feel the turn and rotation
And stop, see the next one waitin'
Get up, get down
Get up, get down
Get up
Sentiment's the same, but the pair of feet change

Get up, get down
Get up, get down
Feel the turn and rotation
And stop, see the next one waitin'
Get up, get down
Get up, get down
Get up
The sentiment's the same, but the pair of feet change

My baby does the hanky-panky
My baby does
My baby does the hanky-panky
My baby does

My baby does the hanky-panky
My baby does
(Rock me)
My baby does the hanky-panky
My baby does

Get up, get down
Get up, get down
Feel the turn and rotation
And stop, see the next one waitin'
Get up, get down
Get up, get down
Get up
Sentiment's the same, but the pair of feet change

I think this song is about a girl who is having multiple one night stands or relationships that don't mean anything to her. " wrap me in your arms, i can't feel it but..." Possibly because she's still hung up on her past. "I know my woes will dry up on my skin, Just like a name I remember hearing, wild winters, warm coffee" this person only wants to love but it's not possible because it's all the same to her. "Get up get down, the sentiments the same but the pair of feet change" She still has the same feelings but tries to find someone else. At the same time her former lover is sleeping around with other women. " My baby does the hanky panky" This is just my interpretation but in general i feel like it's a woman who is being nostalgic and is trying to cope with a lost love.

this songs about the mediocracy of "love", people hear the same words over and over again as they go through relationships. Eventually the words begin to mimmick a cup of coffee, keeps you awake and alive for the time being but once the rush is gone youre gonna need another cup.

Song Exploder (the podcast) has an episode about this song, it's about falling in love the second time.

Basically that you have all these same feelings, and that you realize that love is a repeatable process. While you have these feelings with someone new, that the chemical process going on isn't any different.

I think this song is about someone who falls in love often. It's a familiar pattern. Meet someone, sleep with them, they leave, and "the feet change"- someone else comes in. And so on, on rotation.
