The Wrong Direction Lyrics
Young and naive, I never believed that love could be so well hid
With regret, I'm willing to bet and say the older you get
It gets harder to forgive and harder to forget
It gets under your shirt like a dagger at work
The first cuts the deepest, but the rest will flipping hurt
You build your heart of plastic, get cynical and sarcastic
And end up in the corner on your own
I hide behind my jokes as a form of protection
I thought I was close but, under further inspection,
It seems I've been running in the wrong direction, oh-no
And all you're ever getting is choked up
When you're coked up
And can't remember the reason why you broke up
You call her in the morning when you're coming down and falling
Like an old man on the side of the road
When you're apart, you don't wanna mingle
When you're together, you wanna be single
Ever to chase the taste the kiss of bliss that made your heart tingle
How much greener the grass is with those rose tinted glasses
But the butterflies they flutter by and leave us on our asses
I hide behind my jokes as a form of protection
I thought I was close but, under further inspection,
It seems I've been running in the wrong direction,
There's fish in the sea for me to make a selection
I'd jump in if it wasn't for my ear infection
Cause all I want to do is try to make a connection
It seems I've been running in the wrong direction, oh
I hide behind my jokes as a form of protection
I thought I was close but under further inspection
It seems I've been running in the wrong direction
I'd love to feel love but I can't stand the rejection
I hide behind my jokes as a form of protection
I thought I was close but under further inspection
It seems I've been running in the wrong direction oh
Seems like I'm running in the wrong direction oh
Well it seems I've been running in the wrong direction oh-no
Seems I've been running in the wrong direction
@TheTallestFan I think so too.
In brief, I think this is the story:
"The first cut is the deepest but the rest still flipping hurt".
- The guy was in a relationshhip with a girl and she, at a point, backstabbed him (or said some terrible things.)
"You build your heart of plastic. Get cynical and sarcastic. And end up in the corner on your own"
- Eventually he became emotionally distant in their relationship and they broke up
"I hide behind my jokes as a form of protection, I thought I was close but under further inspection. It seems I've been running in the wrong direction oh no"
- He uses this jokes to deflect the flirtation of women after they broke up but realises this isn't the way he should respond to it.
"When you're coked up And can't remember the reason why you broke up You call her in the morning When you're coming down and falling like an old man on the side of the road"
- He chokes up every time he thinks about the break up, eventually calls her, but fails in the attempt to fix things.
"There's fish in the sea for me to make a selection I'd jump in if it wasn't for my ear infection"
- He using excuses so he doesn't need to find a new girl. (i think because he's still recovering from the break up)
(pretty much my love life :) )
@jelle1110 On my first listen, I thought the lyrics were "eerie reflection" as opposed to "ear infection". I'm not sure which phrase is better.

I'm partial to my first interpretation. The implication being that his own appearance makes him feel uneasy and maybe that he'd be unwanted even if he did jump in.

I love this song, but I don't get the "ear infection"... Sounds like an excuse, right?
Once upon a time I to make love happen (but a lass love tends to spring up unexpected). I had believed I could manufacture it by doing certain things...It was foolish (:Anyway...I have some habits that keep people at arms length and I developed those habits at an early age-
I think this song is just about a person who developed a habit of hiding from rejection from a young age.
And perhaps he's just lamenting about how he's not getting the love he wants and needs because he's actually running away from it.
The wrong direction-It's running away.
