My Only Friend Lyrics
I had all the stars with you
And I had enough
I will wait outside
As long as you are alright
I will know to die
You are beloved
You are beloved
You are
I will wait outside
As long as you arrive
I will wait outside
You were cold last night
So cold
My god
So cold
Hide your broken bones
In my hands
You’ve lost your battle
And I
I had it all
We had it all
And we don’t have to ask why
Believe the lies
Then people tell you
You’ve lost your battle
And vines and tiny thorns
Inside your wound
You’re all I have
My only friend
You’re all I have
My only friend
You’re all I have
My only friend
I had all the stars with you
And I had enough
As long as you are alright
I will know to die
You are beloved
You are beloved
You are
As long as you arrive
I will wait outside
You were cold last night
So cold
My god
So cold
In my hands
You’ve lost your battle
And I
I had it all
We had it all
And we don’t have to ask why
Then people tell you
You’ve lost your battle
And vines and tiny thorns
Inside your wound
My only friend
You’re all I have
My only friend
You’re all I have
My only friend

the simplicity of the lyrics combined with the ethereal-echoing instrumentals makes this one of the best on the album. looking past the catchy beats of black out days and fall in love... this is the most raw i've seen phantogram since they released the nightlife single. the first time i heard this song i cried and cried because even if you have more than one friend, this can always relate to everybody who has that one special person. just the lines "you're all i have, my only friend" is enough to make me bawl and question my actions and thoughts towards everyone i come in contact with. the entire Voices album gets 5 stars from me.
This song reminds me a lot of A Walk to Remember, even down to their love of astronomy.
I had all the stars with you And I had enough (A nod to the astronomy connection, time spent together)
I will wait outside As long as you are alright I will know to die You are beloved (This reminds me of when doctors are bringing someone into the operating room and tell the family to wait outside. "I'll wait outside but you have to be fine".)
The rest of the song seems to talk about them being together, then the subject collapsing, being told the battle is lost, seems to be about losing someone to a chronic illness, very much like A Walk to Remember.
This song reminds me of nightlife because it's really "raw", like somebody said it here. Sarah and Josh said in a interview that it is their favourite song in the album.
The meaning can be the obvious one: a best friends song. Or maybe lovers, but it think best friends fit the most with the lyrics. In this case, I imagine they're talking about each other, cause they're best friends and with all the touring, sometimes all they have is each other.
But as you know, phantogram's music always have an "hidden" meaning, like most songs in Eyelid Movies album. And some of them talk about drugs (such as mouthfull of diamonds and when I'm small). The name Phantogram itself makes refference to psychedellic visions.
So maybe this song is about drugs as well. Like drugs are her only friend. It seems possible if you read the lyrics carefully...
But it's only my opinion. Just like all types of art expression, a song like this one can mean many things at once.
