Maybe

Hannah mostly writes these songs about relationships that she has experienced or that she is going through in the present. Through the lyrics she conveys a sensitive feeling describing her mental and physical feelings for a particular person.

The song "Maybe" in my opinion is about how Hannah lost someone very close to her, and that where quite possibly a relationship was about to form between her and someone else. From Hannah's point of view she tells us her side of the story as going through her life now after losing this person she keeps seeing images reminding her.

"Photographs, Oh you look so well" Pictures that Hannah is now seeing from possibly social media of this certain person makes her realise and that she "can tell" that they are happy and "well" suggesting she knows their better off without her.

"From what was so near" Possibly that this relationship was so close to forming or may Hannah feel that she was already in that relationship. As it was "so near" she may feel upset that she was so close but never did truly form.

"And where are you now" She can't seem to find this person as they have gone from her life but she clearly wants them back as she keeps either visualising them in crowds or she is just trying to find them and hoping to find their face "in crowds". And that "are you there somewhere" she knows this person is out there but then "without a sound" these lyrics just previously sung suggests that this person is avoiding Hannah as they haven't made an effort in even getting in touch with her, making Hannahs experience unbearable as she is being egnored by a person she potentially has feelings for NOW even more that they have gone.

Finally "darling" is used and repeated throughout the chorus suggesting this person was definitely close towards a loving relationship as "darling" is used by couples. And that "MAYBE" the relationship could start over or that "MAYBE" it just wasn't meant to be!!
