Coming of Age

I can't believe no has commented on this awesome song yet. It has this 80s sound to it. the melody is very memorable, and the chorus is just so catchy. In fact the chorus has been stuck in my head for days. Overall a very enjoyable song. I can't wait hear more from the new album. I have high expectations especially after hearing this song.

I think this song is about a maturing relationship. Starts out early highschool love and then one of them breaks it off (so im stepping away) to try to figure themself out before they can try to figure each other out... Time passes, soul searching has been done, lifestyle changes has been made, etc. And the couple, now young adults (mid to late 20's?) are going to give it another shot now that they have an idea where they belong in the world - something that comes with age. :)

To me, this song is about a person that has recently lost someone. They realize that they have been trying to find them self and in the process, have either taken advantage or have forgotten about the needs of the person that they care about most. They see the pain they have caused this person and try to reason with them self that they try to live in the moment and work ahead and to not live in the past. They realize that they have been consumed by fear. And because they did not want to admit they were afraid, they had their pride protect the conviction of their decisions even when they know they are wrong. Because of their pride, they hurt the people they care about most. They have been hurt in the past and are afraid of being hurt again or getting in a situation that would hurt their life. They worry so much about how people judge them (their enemies) and that they cannot see or acknowledge the beauty of the stars or the beauty of what life and love has to offer that is plain and simple right in front of their face. They are tired of fighting with their pride. They are tired of hurting themselves and others. They realize that their childish behavior needs to come to an end. A coming of age.

First part explains how he sees this girl standing there angry and fighting her tears back. (Maybe because he broke up with her or hurt her feelings)

He sees this but his pride is holding him back from giving in and saying sorry or rekindling a relationship He says he trys to live his life with no regrets so every decision he makes he sticks to it.. But he is realizing all his relationships end of leaving in heartbreak or trail of dead .When he does walk away with no remorse nothing .But he is realizing he is starting to be more mature ,probably that young early adult still teen stage ,a player breaking hearts..

This part talks about his fear maybe he is consumed with thoughts that he will be alone if he continues to behave this way and he will end up surrounded with this idea.o

The stars make me think of light in darkness so maybe he's saying his pride is making him into a bad person and the people who don't like him talk about how bad of a person he is but he is knows he is hurting the people he cares about so now he has to choose his pride or love.

Animals fight when they are backed up in a corner so maybe he feels he will Trapt if he is in a relationship But he is too hurt to keep fighting for his pride.All these relationships he ended or to scared to have is hurting him because he's by himself now and the older he gets the more mature he he is getting and realizing love over pride.He's tired of being a player ,tired of playing the game and he is tired of being angry because his pride is ruining his life..

Coming of Age: it means to gain maturity. So did Foster The People after the praised Torches which was absolutely amazing, but maybe repetitive somehow. But now, the band is going in another direction. A direction that should disappoint a lot of Pumped Up Kicks-fans undoubtedly.

"Girl I see ya standing there like a rabid dog And you got those crying eyes"

These fans will be angry, because the new sound isn't the same as PUK or the other songs of Torches; it sounds weird. They don't understand.

"Makes me wanna surrender and wrap you in my arms"

A bit of compassion from the band towards those fans.

"You know I try to live without regrets I'm always moving forward and not looking back"

Maybe the band sustained critics from close friends, plus they felt that their first album wasn't as good as they wanted to be. So, they decided to do what they want no matter what people would say and think.

"But I tend to leave a trail of dead, while I'm moving ahead"

After "Torches", it seemed like they had disappeared. No information, no tweets, nothing. They were unofficially dead. Actually, they were just working on their new project ensuring that no one would ever disturb them.

"So I'm stepping away Cause I got nothing to say"

By doing this new project (Supermodel), FTP creates a rupture between their first album and their new one. They marginalize themselves, and they find it appropriate to say nothing in order to justify that.

"Feels like, feels like it’s coming It feels like, feels It’s like a coming of age"

That's it. Finally, they gained what they wanted: maturity. Now, they can do what they really wanted to do.

"And when my fear pulls me out to sea And the stars are hidden by my pride and my enemies"

Really hard to decipher that. I can't see the meaning behind the first line but for the following one, the stars might represent something precious (their music).Maybe they try to hide their talent/aim (pride), as media do in another way (enemies).

"I seem to hurt the people that I care the most"

This new direction won't satisfy everyone, even some of the most faithful fans of FTP.

"Just like an animal I protect my pride When I'm too bruised to fight"

FTP feels this new album will be attended of aggressive critics and it could affect them. So, they will make their possible to keep their talent/aim and not make another PUK.

"And even when I'm wrong I tend to think I'm right"

And even if this new direction could be considered as bad, FTP will always see that as a huge step forward for them, no matter what.

"Well I’m bored of the game And too tired to rage"

Are they bored of the industry (See 'Houdini')? When the critics come, they don't think they'll have to react.

In brief, FTP is taking another direction. This direction is hard to understand for many fans who are expecting to another "hit" or a Torches-like album. However, they are confident in what they are doing and won't go back.

This song has kind of a laid back, mellow tone, almost to the point of making the protagonist sound a little tired (not in a bad way). I think a lot of young adults in their late 20s or early to mid 30s can feel this way. You feel your energy level winding down after years of new beginnings, just starting out, and maybe a little too much partying ("Well I'm Bored of the Game, and I'm too tired to rage"). You're not new at being an adult anymore. Maybe you have a "been there, done that" mentality, but you also realize that you still have a lot to learn ("And even when I'm wrong I tend to think I'm right").

For whatever reason, these days, it seems like people prolong their youth as much as possible. This is a song about finally acknowledging impending (or already realized) adulthood, but maybe not knowing what exactly to do about it. Whether it's trying not to fall into the same relationship traps again ("Makes me wanna surrender and wrap you in my arms") or facing the fact that maybe you aren't always the hero in your relationships ("I seem to hurt the people that care the most"), you're "coming of age" and finding that you don't always know how to take the next step.

People tend to grow to counter what they are afraid of or what they hate... sometimes not seeing what it does to the people close to us.

I think, this song is about the coming of good times.

This is about a broken relationship, he says, he is trying to move forward with his life, trying to move on but the moment she cries, it makes his heart melt, but he says: life is all about ups and downs and good times will come eventually.

I think this song is about a man telling his life story of wanting to protect his pride and but having too much pride, causing him to lose sense of what is right or wrong and telling the listener to not make the same mistake as he did. As the coming of age part is him getting older leaving him with nothing because he was too cocky and nobody likes that type of person( I know I don't ) causing nobody to want to be with him. Leaving him with nobody who cares and no help. Just a guess!! :)
