These Days Are Numbered Lyrics

There's always hope
Hope in death
It brands these bonds
Refines the rest
But these days are numbered
This life absolute
I need this faith to keep me walkin'
To keep me alive

Oh darlin', oh darlin'
Won't you please take me home
Oh darlin', my sweet darlin'
Won't you please keep me warm

We must strive to be
Be like the moon
To be kind
Distracted by its tune
'Cause these days are numbered
This life absolute
We all complain if it rains or it shines
But we're never mad at the moon

Oh darlin', oh darlin'
Won't you please keep me warm
Oh darlin', sweet darlin'
Won't you please take me home

The first verse: Be optimistic about everything, because life is short. Live in the moment. At the same time, live in the moment because life is too short.

The second verse: It reminds me of a one night stand, or a relationship where the love is needed.

The third verse: The moon is always there, and doesn't put out much to us. Always standing behind us. It's not like the sun, or natural weather, where it's a force. My interpretation is that a silent, always there, love is what is to be strived for. We're never mad at the moon, it's not in our lives generally, it doesn't effect us, but when we see it, we admire it.

Overall, this song to me is about either a reoccuring one night stand or a long term love that is not posessive, where the love is there, and is needed but the person doesn't need or want the 'sun and rain' sort of love. They have enough going on in their daily live.

Beautiful song. I'm surprised there's not more interpretations.

This song says that we need to strengthen our personal relationships and take comfort in those we love while we still can. These days are numbered. Stop complaining about everything ("we all complain if it rains or it shines"); just enjoy life and take it all in ("we must strive to be like the moon, to be kind . . . we're never mad at the moon").

The harmonica at the end reminds me of some of the great Dylan songs.
