This is a very beautiful song, I did literature at school so I'll try my best to explain the meaning, here goes:

It starts of with the line "written in these walls are the stories that I can't explain":- Figuratively, he built a wall to protect his emotions but it wasn't just there because he wanted to guard himself it was because of a past relationship that went wrong. In the relationship before, he "left his heart open":-He confessed his love but now "it stays right here empty for days":-It's hollow since she left.

"She told me in the morning She don't feel the same about us in her bones It seems to me that when I die These words will be written on my stone" :-In the morning she broke up with him and he will always remember the words that hurt him before she left. And that hurt was one of the reasons he is restrained now.

"And I'll be gone, gone tonight The ground beneath my feet is open wide The way that I've been holding on too tight But nothing in between.":- He left the house that night but he was hesitant to leave because he was holding on to the relationship that doesn't exist anymore.

"The story of my life I take her home I drive all night to keep her warm and time... Is frozen":- This is the current relationship and how he shows he cares but it reminds him of his past love hence "time is frozen". It's also an example of a pun, being he keeps her "warm" but time is "frozen".

"The story of my life I give her hope I spend her love until she's broke inside":-The things he does to show that he cares gives her hope he'll let his guard down but he doesn't and she's broken. This also a play on words with spending love till she's broke. "Written on these walls Are the colors I can't change":- "colors" represents feelings that he can't change an is used because in writing you can use different colors. So it's a nice example of symbolism. "Leave my heart open But it stays right here in its cage":-He wants to express his feelings but it stays caged up behind his walls.

"I know that in the morning now I see us in the light upon the hill Although I am broken My heart is untamed still":- Remember in the morning she broke up with him, this either the same day or another but either way his heart is broken but he still loves her uncontrollably.

"And I'll be waiting for this time To come around But baby running after you Is like chasing the clouds":-He's waiting for his love to come back even though he realizes she won't be his.

I think that "she" could be the past. Written in these walls are the stories that I can't explain I leave my heart open but it stays right here empty for days (You cant change the past. He leaves his heart open for it to come back around but it never will cause its gone)

She told me in the morning She don't feel the same about us in her bones (He wants to go back but the 'past' wont let him) It seems to me that when I die These words will be written on my stone (Self explanatory)

And I'll be gone, gone tonight The ground beneath my feet is open wide (He's stuck in those memories) The way that I've been holdin' on too tight With nothing in between (Holding onto the past)

The story of my life, I take her home I drive all night to keep her warm and time (He'll do anything to have some of those moments back) Is frozen (the story of, the story of) (The past is frozen in photographs) The story of my life, I give her hope I spend her love until she's broke, inside (He is reminiscing but cant remember certain things)

Written on these walls are The colors that I can't change (You cant change it)

I know that in the morning now I see ascending light upon a hill Although I am broken, my heart is untamed, still (He's sad from spending all night thinking about whats gone)

And I've been waiting for this time to come around But baby running after you is like chasing the clouds (Chasing the past is like chasing clouds - pointless and impossible. Its time to move on and live in the now)

This song makes total sense to me. Like as if it were written about me. It's about constantly hurting people. For OneDirection it's that they feel that with each girl they individually come across, it starts off well, and they have the best intentions but they always eventually hurt her because although they hold on to her and have an open heart to her and want to love her, they don't 'actually' love her on the inside.

they have so many many memories and regrets of things they have done and they have no idea why they did them. "that I can't explain" they have an open heart to their girls but then they feel like they've used their own love up until it's empty.

"She told me in the morning She don't feel the same about us in her bones

Everything can change overnight. He acts different in the morning because he's not sure what he's feeling. He's confused because he knows he should love her but he doesn't feel it. And she senses that. So deep down inside she doesn't feel the same about the two of them anymore.

"It seems to me that when I die These words will be written on my stone"

This same process happens time after time. Girl after girl. They feel like they have a reputation of hurting girls and someday when they die this reputation will be engraved on their tomb stones.

He wants to run away from the hurt he's caused. The ground beneath his feet is open to go find a new life. New people. New reputations.

"The way that I've been holdin' on too tight With nothing in between"

He holds on to the girl so tightly when really there's no emotional attachment there between him to her.

"The story of my life, I take her home I drive all night to keep her warm and time Is frozen (the story of, the story of)"

it always happens the same way. He romances her. He thinks he loves her and he'd do anything to keep her happy. And in that moment, time is frozen because that's where he wishes that the relationship's dynamics would stay.

"The story of my life, I give her hope I spend her love until she's broke, inside The story of my life (the story of, the story of)"

It happens time and time again, he gives her hope to begin with and then as his love fades he spends hers until she feels so broken from confusion of where she stands in every moment that she's with him.

"Written on these walls are The colors that I can't change"

All these memories are unchangeable

"Leave my heart open But it stays right here in it's cage"

Although my heart always seems open and although I'm open to relationships, my heart is bound by uncertainty and an unwillingness to fully open up to any girl. It's locked up.

"I know that in the morning now I see ascending light upon a hill"

he knows that there will be a silver lining with each new day that comes along. Even though he feels so awful it will get better.

"Although I am broken, my heart is untamed, still"

Even though his heart is broken, it's broken because of the hurt he feels for hurting the girl. Not because she tamed his heart, because his heart can't ever be tamed.

"And I'll be gone, gone tonight The fire beneath my feet is burning bright"

The ground beneath his feet is burning him. Because of all the pain he feels in every moment he spends still surrounded by the same broken relationships. So he just wants to run away.

"And I've been waiting for this time to come around But baby running after you is like chasing the clouds"

Now he realises he actually loves her but she won't have a bar of it because of the past. And that's the story of his life. That's just how it goes.

• I believe that the official video clip for this song is representing themselves the way they were before they became guys who hurt people. The pictures are memories of times that they wish they could go back to. And it also represents the idea that their families are always going to be there. So no matter how much they screw up, they can still come back to their families and be accepted for the good that they are.

I believe this about someone who is giving everything into a relationship and he continues to try and keep pushing forward to make her happy. The Lines in the chorus seem to be someone who keeps being there for someone because of how much the love them but they know that after it all it will just go back to something he doesn't want. He really wants things happen again and he understands what hes doing to himself chasing somebody who just wont be there.

I think it's about failures and freezing time for the better. It is about both past relationships and memories. The "story of my life" part is the obvious dwelling on failures, and the "time is frozen" is about keeping the good, even though the memories might eventually fade.

I believe that this is a song about letting go. It begins with his girlfriend telling him that "she doesn't feel the same way about us anymore". Even though he still loves her, doesn't understand what happened, but despite his own feelings, he lets her go. So he stays frozen to the way it used to be, but slowly he is getting on with his life.

this song is about love......and offers family and home (where we grown) as one of the best places to find the real love. (although it is hard to remember the past and the past dedications....while all I (as a young person) am thinking about is NOW) and also this song asks us to change our life on our own.....rather than just expecting the others to provide us a lovely life!!!!! . . . . Well in an interview, Zayn said that he thinks the message of the song is to remember all of the details in your life that make up the story of your life. He said it's about remembering the people and relationships that you had that make you who you are today.

I don't think it's about a girl not loving him back. Watch the video, you'll understand. Even in the song title "Story of my life". It kinda gives you a show that they're talking about them.

"It seems to me that when I die These words will be written on my stone" I think it's about all the good memories that made them who they were today.

The video shows them recreating the old photos of them growing up. They're moving around in the pictures as if saying they'll forever remember those good times and moments. Like they'll cherish tose happy moments.

This song made me cry and the video along with it. I recommend atching it ♥
