Here Comes the Night Time II Lyrics

Here comes the night time

I hurt myself again
Alone with all my friends
Feels like it never ends
Here comes the night again

Here comes the night time
Here comes the night time
Here comes the night time

You hurt yourself again
Alone with all your friends
Feels like it never ends
Here comes the night again

Here comes the night time, coming on slow
Here comes the night time, I know that you know
Here comes the night time
Here comes the night time
Here comes the night time
Here comes the night time

Well, I hurt myself again
Alone with all my friends
Feels like it never ends
Here comes the night again

Here comes the night time
Here comes the night time
Here comes the night time
Here comes the night time

This is simply about not stepping outside of your own self constructed boundaries, wanting to do more... but just hanging out with friends. And then not being happy at the end of the day about being complacent, and not stepping out into the world unsheltered and free to explore at will.

Some think the ones who are by themselves are the saddest and have no experiences. The truth is that there are those, but there is also a sub-set that are not limited by anything since they can go seek what they want without following any social norms.

The protaganist says basically if I could free myself from my "friends" and you could free yourself from your "friends" the possibility is that we could meet and explore our own world together.

Love Arcade Fire, quintessential music for the "seeker"

I suspect this song returns to the subject of Reflektor (the song) and is about being alone, on the computer and talking to your 'friends' who you only know online. For me this happens mostly in the deep night (as I type this at 5 AM). I think the hurt would be the distance between the subjects.

Song Meaning

Am I the only one who feels like the song has something to do with self-harm?

"I hurt myself again, Along with all my friends"

Here it's kind of blatant, the idea of hurting yourself, and when your friends find out they feel guilty because they feel like they had something to do with it, and they feel like they failed in some way because they couldn't stop it.

"Feels like it never ends, Here comes the night again..."

The idea that once you start it's very hard to stop because of the sense of control that it gives you, but you still feel ashamed and embarrassed and inadequate ("here comes the night") knowing that you hurt yourself and thinking of how people close to you who want to help you will feel.

"Here comes the night" might also suggest that you often do it when no one else is awake so no one will notice.

I might see it this way because I have struggled with self-harm in the past, and so have some of my friends, and just those four lines kind of explain it all. I am probably wrong, but that's just what immediately comes to my mind when i hear this song.

My Interpretation

The tone at the start of the song is what you used to hear at the start of side two on cassettes. I had forgotten about that completely before I heard it on this song.

Memory

Another song from Reflektor that deals with religion, similar to Here Comes The Night Time Part 1.

The line "I hurt myself again" is almost certainly an allusion to the opening lines of the Nine Inch Nails song “Hurt”, popularised by Johnny Cash just before his death.
