Porno Lyrics

Take the makeup
Off your eyes
I've got to see you
Hear your sacred sighs

Before the breakup
Comes the silence

I'm talking to you
You say you're over it
But I know . . .

I thought I knew you
You thought you knew me
But now that you do
It's not so easy now
That I know

You can cry, I won't go
You can scream, I won't go
Every man that you know
Would have run at the word go

Little boys with their porno
Oh, I know they hurt you so

They don't know what we know
Never know what we know

And all your makeup
Just take it off
I've got to find you
Before the line is lost

I know I hurt you
I won't deny it
When I reach for you
You say, "I'm over it"

But I know . . .
You can cry, I won't go
You can scream, I won't go
Every man that you know
Would have run at the word go

Little boys with their porno
Oh, I know they hurt you so

They don't know what I know
It's so little that we know
But the cup it overflows
Little boys with their porno
This is their world, where can we go?

Makes me feel like something's wrong with me
Makes me feel like something's wrong with me

Can you see me?

You can cry, I won't go
You can scream, I won't go
Little boys with their porno
Little boys with their porno

Makes me feel like something's wrong
It's the only world we know
Yeah, something's wrong
Little boys with their porno

And boys they learn
Some selfish shit
Until the girl
Won't put up with it

On and on and on we go
I just have to know
I'm not over it
I'm not over it

You say love is real
Like a disease
Come on, tell me please
I'm not over it

I'm not over it

Wait . . .

This song is about female sexuality and male sexual immaturity. And about the singer feeling both threatened by the male sexual image often portrayed these days (predatory, self serving and simplistically sexual) to the point where it makes him feel like something is wrong with him. He feels this way because when the female object of his desires cries, or screams or shows emotion he doesn't want to run like every man she knows; he sees her as more than simply "porno", that is a sexual object.

The singer of the song sees the female sexuality as a heavenly gift (sacred sighs) as opposed to the meaningless porno that men (described as little boys here; men are often referred to as emotionally juvenile) indulge in.

In short; this song proclaims that women are not just sexual objects.

My Interpretation

nail on the head! This song is definitely one of the best on the album. I love that AF isn't afraid to put out this type of message.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE Arcade Fire! They're one of my favorite bands of all time. Along with making some of my favorite songs of all time. So there's confliction here for me giving the fact that I like porn. I mean... I treat women and men equally. I'm no sexist or misogynist. Whenever I look at an ass or a nice pair of titties I appreciate it greatly and to an extent believe it is truly sacred to some form... I mean it's beautiful you can't deny. So I hope thats all the song's about. Not being sexist...

Biancholis: I don't think he's criticizing porn itself, but rather how some men see women as nothing more than an extension of the porn they can look up when they're alone. If there's no real connection, if it's just physical, then it's not really much different from masturbation.

This song seems to be part of a theme on Reflektor: making a relationship last. Any loving relationship will be tested again and again, and will take hard work to make last. In Porno, Regine's character is trying to leave Win's character but he won't let her: "You say, I'm over it / But I know / You can cry I won't go / You can scream, I won't go" In the next song, Afterlife, the two are working to resolve their problems: "I've gotta know / Can we work it out? / Let's scream and shout 'till we work it out"

He sees her as a whole person, beautiful even underneath her makeup - which seems like a metaphorical shield she uses to protect herself from being vulnerable that he needs her to remove so he can get through to her ("And all your makeup / Just take it all off / I've got to find you"). She's trying to break up with him, but unlike all those other boys who "would have run at the word go" he's not letting her. He needs to get through to her and make her see it's still worth trying.

Some women love being sexual; it can be beautiful and empowering, as in this song where the woman has "sacred sighs." The problem comes when men expect women to behave like actresses in porn, who get off even when the man is being sexually selfish and putting in zero effort to make sure she's fulfilled. These "little boys" end up thinking that, like the sex they see in porn, relationships are easy and don't take any effort ("And boys they learn / Some selfish shit"). But they quickly find it doesn't work like that ("Until the girl / Won't put up with it"), and this is so overwhelming they just run away. And what else would they do? They've never been taught how to see women as sexual objects AND loved ones who they respect and want to be happy.

But Win's character does know how. "They don't know that we know / Never know what we know" He knows he can keep at it until he makes things right. He'll just keep reminding her of his love for her. "You say love is real... Come on tell me please / I'm not over it... Wait" Even in a world where Regine's character has been hurt by selfish boys, where Win's character feels out of place, where they don't know where there is a place for them, he knows he can make it work if he just tries.

My Interpretation

@amandimal My interpretation was off, I really like yours.

I agree with you all but I also think its saying that not every man is a disgusting sex addict. And people constantly treating all men like it can be degrading to the men who arent.

best song on the album.

beautiful song

I think this song is about how hard it is to make real love last in the modern world where everything is ephemeral and superficial.

Porn is used an an embodiment of this modern love, and in doing so the singer/song states that all love and relationships in this age are comparable to little boys looking at porn.

The singer and his partner are looking for something real, true, lasting love, but since everybody else is just looking for the quick fix they are forced to wonder if perhaps they are wrong. Then don't know what to do or where to go.

"Little boys with their porno But this is their world Where can we go?

Makes me feel like something's wrong with me Makes me feel like something's wrong with me"

I agree with niteflite01. The song is basically about how a majority of males see women as sexual objects and treat them as such despite and the narrator is sick of seeing his love interest being treated as one.

That being said, Porno has become my favorite song on the album. So deep yet so fantastic.

My favorite interpretation so far. :)

I believe this song is about mainly the lead singer Win, though also a majority of men in the world. It's about how many treat women like objects. They treat them like sex toys. They're there when the women's ready to have fun, but run when they hear them scream, cry or show any emotion or any desire to be emotionally healed or just have their man hold them in their arms. Win's saying he's tired of it. He knows it's not right. He knows she's a person just like him who is not an object or thing like porn. Women are people. It's a lesson he learned over time. Hence why he's writhing the song about this. Although he's not over this topic, even though he already learned from it. Same thing goes for the girl. She's not over it, even though her lover doesn't treat her like just an object anymore. They're not over it because they see it so much in the world. ( This is their world. Where can we go?!? ) They want to change the world and help relationships and make more people happy. That's what I took from this song.

Be careful how you treat your lover. For they are not objects or sex toys to just play with then say bye. They are people just like you. Treat others how you like to be treated.

The song's about the inner thoughts of a guy who's dealing with his girlfriend or wife being objectified. He wants to believe he's better than that, but he secretly fears he isn't.

Great song, great commentary on sexism. I identify with this one a lot.

Seems he's generally railing against the objectification of women, while doing the same to her as well. He tries to set the others apart - "little boys at the porno" - but at the same time he is attempting to subject her to his demands "take off your makeup", "you can scream, I won't go," etc. He even admits as much - "I know I've hurt you", "feel like something's wrong with me," etc. In his own way he is trying to remake her. Control her. He's not seeing and accepting her for who she is, but projecting his subjective ideal woman on her.

I agree with you! I Thought the same thing
