Ten Thousand Feet Lyrics
I swear this plane is going down
Brace yourself, this is not a drill
This ain't the way that I planned on going out
And in this moment, I see my life flash before my eyes
(Before my eyes)
At the best I'll be damned to the sea
Let the waves bury me
Ten thousand feet in the air
And as we're falling faster, the thoughts of you begin
Ten thousand feet in the air
And as we're falling faster, the thought of you begins
Woah, ten thousand feet in the air
And as we're falling faster, the thought of you begins
I wish there was a way to let you know
(A way to let you know)
I wish there was a way to let you know
I am the living dead
I see my fate and it's just my luck
I know you think the end's not upon us
I've got news for you
We're so fucked
(We are the living dead)
We are the living dead
(We are the living dead)
We are the living dead
I'm writing you a letter, I hope it falls right down in your hands
At least you'll know exactly how I fell if all goes to plan
I see an overbearing terror in every single pair of eyes
No delusion of safety or senseless hope in disguise
Why can't you see that I fear for the worst?
This is what I get, what I deserve
Ten thousand feet in the air
And as we're falling faster, the thoughts of you begin
Ten thousand feet in the air
And as we're falling faster, the thought of you begins, woah
Brace yourself, this is not a drill
This ain't the way that I planned on going out
And in this moment, I see my life flash before my eyes
(Before my eyes)
At the best I'll be damned to the sea

The song is clearly about the people aboard as a plane is crash down. It's hard to say if the vocalist is one character, or playing multiple parts. "I swear this plane is going down!" The lyrics are a mesh of people's panic and last thoughts. "and in this moment I see my flash flash before my eyes" "Why can't you see that I fear for the worst? The vocalist is not hopeful and has accepted his fate."I am the living dead. I see your fate, and it looks just like mine." It is heavily implied that he wants to talk to someone very important to him once more, possibly to confess love to a significant other. "I wish there was a way to let you know." He write a letter of his last thoughts in the hopes that this person will read it and know he spent his last moments alive thinking of them. "I'm writing you a letter, I hope it falls right down in your hands." However, he knows she/he will never find out the truth. He thinks over and over about it as the moments come to an end. "I wish there was a way to let you know... I wish there was a way to let you know..."
Note: In my personal opinion, the echoed "Know"s in the last chorus are to hint that the speaker did indeed die with the rest of the passengers, the specific style brings out a certain "ghost of his words" connotation.
Couldn't have said it better myself.

I was watching Cast Away and when they were about to crash he said ten thousand feet... made me think of this song and his situation and figured maybe that's were the idea came from? Hmmm
