The line "I smelled the fire place"......makes me think of the lyrics of West........perhaps its the same characters here.
I also thought that one of the two friends in this song may be the "mute" one, from Mute song. The last line "you barely talked and I didn't mind" would suggest that, considering in Mute, there is line "to hear the only words that I know"...

Also I sort of wish this song had a more up-beat tempo because the lyrics seem to be rather carefree and fun while the music ends up making it sound sad......but perhaps that's what Ben was going for.
I get the feeling he was inspired to write this after he found out one of his childhood friends passed away; mostly because of this line: "You were something That would always be around". And the death made him remember being young and how different the world is from a child's perspective. I love the melancholy sound, it's so nostalgic and bitter sweet. Like he is not only mourning the loss of his friend but also the simplistic innocence of being a kid.
