Well, the first few times I heard this song I didn't have a lyric sheet and was just trying to hear what the lyrics were. I initially thought Rody was talking about the extinction of the Beothuk people (a now extinct First Nations group that lived on Newfoundland when Europeans first arrived).
The Beothuk died mostly due to war with Europeans and disease. Hints to this are "a GUNSHOT away there's a place I want to be" and "it left INFECTION in our lips and a longing in the mist".
And then the line "you're as deep as your grave and your marching to the heartbeat of the land" could elude to the now extinct Native group. The line "Jonny and the boys" welcomed them to the island. Well, the first Governor of Newfoundland was named "John Guy", and he tried to establish peaceful relations with the Beothuk.
But then I just came here and read the lyrics carefully, and I think everything I said above might all be nonsense.
