Drumhead Trial Lyrics

From the unrelenting beat of a pounding drum
(come alive)
From the seizing breast of a wicked beast
(we survive)
In the hallowed marriage of sound and revolt
(come anew)
To the hollowed, disparaged, shed and molt, overdue!
Splintering fingers, gore strewn across each hand
(sinking stone [x2])
Splintering fingers, gore strewn across each hand
(sinking stone [x2])
Pray for a way out of here
Pray for a way

No animal in all the kingdom shall ever strike me down
A coward in his finest moment
Heavy is the head that wears the crown, c'mon!
Be swift and painless, not a glancing blow right to the back of the head
To the back of the head
Be swift and painless, not a glancing blow
(sinking stone [x2])
Pray for a way out of here
Pray for a way

A long, slow pull on the briar
Ready, aim,

When the fire burns, callusing
Topping off the urns, a sound remains

Look to the actor in the heavy armor, his metal shakes
Listen well to the deafening clamor whimpering makes
Look now to the unassuming, unwavering
Standing before the heavens, screaming
Bring on the storm
Bring on the storm, bring on the rain
Bring on the jesters and bring on the pain
Bring on the storm, bring on the rain
Bring on the jesters and bring on the pain

The seed is planted, let the roots reach far and wide, and let it grow tall
Let the rings remain intact on the inside
And though the autumn brings a fall of leaves
Let it grow tall
(we come anew [x3])
The seed is planted, let the roots reach far and wide, and let it grow tall
Let the rings remain intact on the inside
And though the autumn brings a fall of leaves
Let it grow tall
(we come anew [x3])

Look now to the unassuming, unwavering
Standing before the heavens, screaming
Bring on the storm [x2]

I have no idea what this song is about. The first half of it and the title make it sound like it's about being judged too quickly and unfairly but the last half of it doesn't relate to that. There is a star trek episode called Drumhead Trial though and Rody is a known Trek fan.

Haha, very true about Rody being a Trek fan. Their other single out "Clarity" has a cool video to it if you haven't seen it. I've been modifying these lyrics with the help of some other people, but I think I have them down.

The part where it talks about "Standing before the heavens screaming, bring on the storm" might be a reference to shakespeare's King Lear. There is a scene in the play where the main character, King Lear is standing out in a field screaming at the sky during a storm. Also there's a jester character in the story called "the Fool". Anyway, the song as a whole might be about cowardice disguised as bravery versus actual bravery. It seems like there are a lot of verses relating to this sort of thing, such as "look to the actor in the heavy armor, his metal shakes, listen well to the deafening clamor whimpering makes", then going on to "look now to the unassuming, unwavering, standing before...". Perhaps the 'King Lear reference' was to show that the ones dressed up as knights in shining armor aren't the ones who deserve praise, but rather the madman who is brave enough to take on the very heavens alone (This is a theme in King Lear).

Oh, yeah by the way, sorry if that sounded super pretentious and snobby. If you haven't read king lear, you can probably just go on sparknotes or something to find all this stuff.

Not sure about the "seeds planted" part, but it seems this song is about a gladiator trying to win enough battles to be released from slavery.

Given Rody's tendency to sometimes pull lyrical themes from his ass, this could very well be just about having a new drummer in the band

I perceive this song to be a call to arms against depression. I knew there was a reason I was so drawn to it. Everything beats you down, but be born again. Shed the skin of your insecurity and pray for help to leave the darkness. Heavy is the head that wears the crown of despair. Wanting a swift end to your life rather than torture of how your perceived life is. Look to those who think they have it all together yet fall apart and don't emulate that. You don't need any of it. Stand strong. There will be tribulation, but in the end....we come anew. Ready to face it. Bring on the storm. I could go into more detail, especially with the musical cues.. but it's how I view the material. I think it is a reminder to go back to your roots and rebuild all your fucked up decisions. Letting them pass on as you build yourself up from that, never letting anything hold you down. At least that's how I've conceptualized it. Stand strong and proud. You are your own master

I take it as a song about defeating depression and finding it in yourself to shrug off the despair and once that "seed is planted" let it grow tall, ready to face the storm. Of course I could go more in detail, picking apart each stanza, but that would be a ridiculously long comment
