New Lyrics
Don't look at me
It's way too soon to see
What's gonna be
Don't look at me
All my life
I never knew
What I could be, what I could do
Then we were new
You came along
And made my life a song
One lucky day
You came along
Just in time
Well I was searching for a rock
You came along
Then we were new
We can do what we want
We can live as we choose
You see there's no guarantee
We got nothing to lose
Don't look at me
I can't deny the truth
It's plain to see
Don't look at me
All my life
I never knew
What I could be, what I could do
Then we were new
We can do what we want
We can live as we choose
You see there's no guarantee
We got nothing to lose
Don't look at me
It's way too soon to see
What's gonna be
Don't look at me
All my life
I never knew
What I could be, what I could do
Then we were new
Then we were new
Now we are new
It's way too soon to see
What's gonna be
Don't look at me
I never knew
What I could be, what I could do
Then we were new
And made my life a song
One lucky day
You came along
Well I was searching for a rock
You came along
Then we were new
We can live as we choose
You see there's no guarantee
We got nothing to lose
I can't deny the truth
It's plain to see
Don't look at me
I never knew
What I could be, what I could do
Then we were new
We can live as we choose
You see there's no guarantee
We got nothing to lose
It's way too soon to see
What's gonna be
Don't look at me
I never knew
What I could be, what I could do
Then we were new
Now we are new

Got To Get You Into My Life. Mind you, if he can't borrow a bit from The Beatles, who can?
This is clearly a love song.
Yes, to Nancy. Despite all he has achieved, only now he discovers "what I can be, what I can do..."

Wow, a beautiful song that reminds me of “In My Life”. The song celebrates the way the person he loves changed his life, changed his view of the world, changed his view of himself. Definitely a later-in-years, looking-back, thank-you song to a person he loves.
The phrase “when we were new” really brings me back to the amazing times when you’ve newly fallen in love, and the apple of your eye can do no wrong, and you are the happiest you can be.
My one question is why “Don’t look at me”? What is he ashamed of or embarrassed about? Perhaps he’s a little embarrassed because he’s getting emotional looking back at that wonderful time of his life when he and this person shared this happiness. It makes me tear up a bit looking back on those times in my life.
This is a real gem in McCartney’s 21st Century catalogue.
