A Light That Never Comes

Waiting for a light that never comes means waiting for something to happen that never will.

He sings how his will and strength have been toughened by everything that's happened ("test fate", "pressed with that weight", etc.). He cannot be controlled, he can't even be held in check - that is his strength. However, even then; he knows that eventually his time will come ("off with his head") and he may even be actively waiting for that day ("I chase the sun"). Until then, he will keep moving forward ... when his 'day is done' (i.e.: the light finally does come).

About time they let Mike rap again.

To me, this song is talking about a victim of domestic or child abuse. The singer is trying to all he can to survive the hell he's going through, trying to make sure the abuser can't catch him and break him.

He is doing the best he can, holding strong, while the situation is getting worse. He knows the situation is getting worse, the night getting darker and darker. All he can do is wait for the dawn, maybe his escape from the abusive situation or maybe he'll be an adult soon and can leave.

It's in the chorus that he realize that no matter how strong he is, he'll never live through the abuse he's forced to endure. There will be no dawn for him, only a trip into eternal darkness.

He remembers when he was smaller that a king only rules until it's "off with his head". His abusers have made their bed, now it's their turn to lie in it. He decides that that is what he'll do. If he's to die, he'll take his abusers with him. So I think it changes in the next verses. This time he's telling his abusers that THEIR night will always last and THEIR light will never come.

He'll never find his light in this life and he'll make sure his abusers won't be alive to be able to do so either.

This seems similar to Waiting for the End because they both sound different from other LP songs (old and new) and have similar themes (frustration, grief).

I'm going to get a lot of flak for this, but I think this is a Satanic song.

Try to see where this is coming from before you make assumptions.

-- "Lightning above and a fire below me" Jesus told followers that he beheld Satan 'as lightning fall from heaven.' A lightning bolt is a Satanic symbol. The fire is hell. What else would this line mean, anyway?

-- "When it rains, it pours" -- "When the floodgates open brace your shores" Satan is sometimes referred to as "rain man".

-- "You cannot catch me, cannot hold me" -- "You cannot stop, much less control me" The rest of the verse is things that Satan would say to believers.

-- "The nights go on / Waiting for a light that never comes" In an increasingly secular society, how should this line be interpreted? -- "I chase the sun / Waiting for a light that never comes" Sun worship. The entire song follows this doubting God theme.

-- "A king can only reign 'til instead -- There comes that day it's "off with his head"" Reference to God. Think songs like "Morte et Dabo" by Asking Alexandria

I know Chester said he believes in God, but the media has taken a very dark turn lately, and these sorts of lines come up fairly often nowadays, though sometimes more subtly than in this song. Please take this submission seriously.

it sounds as though mike is saying that the label cannot control or understand him and that he is waiting for it all to end but the light will never come

I think its about being told lies about how easy life will be but then realizing later on that its hard af

"Off with his head" reminds me strongly of 'Alice In Wonderland' with the Queen of Hearts.
