Getaway Lyrics

Everyone’s a critic looking back up the river
Every boat is leaking in this town
Everybody is thinking they can all be delivered sitting in a box like lost and found

But I found my place and it’s all right
We’re all searching for a better way
Get this off my plate
It’s all right, I got my own way to believe

Find a lighthouse in the dark stormy weather
We all could use a sedative right now
Holy rollers sitting with their backs to the middle all alone and sinking the bow

And if you want to have to pray, it’s all right
We all be thinking with our different brain get this off my plate
It’s all right, I got my own way to believe, it’s okay

Sometimes you find yourself having to put all your faith in no faith
Mine is mine and yours won’t take its place
Now, make your getaway
Science says we’re making love like the lizards
Try and say that fossils ain’t profound
Silence says we’re not allowed to consider
Simon says stand up sit down you’re out

But I found my place
And it’s all right, I’m bearing witness to some better things, get this off my plate
It’s all right, I’ve got my own way to believe
It’s okay, sometimes you find yourself being told to change your ways
There’s no way, mine is mine and yours won’t take its place, now make your getaway

It’s okay, sometimes you find yourself having to put all your faith in no faith
Mine is mine and yours won’t take its place
Now make your getaway, it’s okay
Sometimes you find yourself being told to change your ways
For god’s sake, mine is mine and yours won’t take its place

Now, make your getaway
Now, make your getaway

I think it's pretty simple, a "live and let live" kind of message aimed at the "holy rollers" to try to keep their opinion to themselves and stop pushing their beliefs on everyone else.

For anyone that has a "born again" in their family, I'm sure you can relate.

In my opinion, I think you guys are only getting half the picture... I feel like Vedder is taking neither side, as in he's not siding with the "holy rollers" or the science nuts. Notice the first several lines say " everybody" in them. This is why I like this song so much and also why I love Pearl Jam... I think he's trying to convey a message of compromise between all these people who refuse to see things any other way besides their own.

The part where he talks about "silence says..." I think he's actually...

He is saying "Science says" and it's a direct reference to to religious wackos who think fossils were implanted in the earth by Satan to fool us into thinking the Earth is more than 6000 years old. Google it, it's a thing.

You must understand that Science is completely built on a foundation of questioning. Peer review is one of the necessary steps of the scientific method, the part of the process where your peers review your work and...

The premise of the song seems to be "Don't worry about what I believe in, you can have faith in what you want but I'll stick to my own beliefs, I don't need you to convince me of yours". It reflects the mindset of those of us who are atheists.

I particularly love the line "Get this off my plate, It’s all right, I got my own way to believe". Sometimes religious (very select minority) tend to want to force feed their doctrine to the rest of the world. When we say "I'm fine with my own beliefs, thanks" it tends to fall on deaf ears.

My Interpretation

dude seriously Atheists are just as preachy as religious people, stop trying to make yourself sound, well, holier than thou. I get posts on my Facebook page all the time from atheist friends saying how dumb religious people are. Atheists try and "force feed" their opinion as well.

Hrd2Imagin hit the nail on the head, but then again, with a name like that, it's to be expected ;)

Anyways, this is a great song, one of their best, and a hell of a great way to start off the new album. It sounds like a Binaural-era mid tempo rocker, it's got that trademark Pearl Jam sound... you can tell it's them before Eddie even sings.

Great start to a fucking amazing record.

Eddie, who I believe through lots of thought to his lyrics, is not an atheist. I do think he's struggled with faith his entire life, though, and understands that some people have completely lost it and won't get it back. This song is telling us to let them [me] be. Atheists are content with their decision, and certainly don't need their beliefs replaced with anyone else's.

@chad156304 Eddie Vedder is at the very least agnostic and he doesn't subscribe to any religious literature. Also, atheists do not have any beliefs to be replaced as they only lack a belief in god.

I think this isn't exactly atheistic song. It is saying that you shouldn't take beliefs as a package deal. "Everybody is thinking they can all be delivered sitting in a box like lost and found"

That you can believe only from inside of yourself and you should keep it that way: "It’s all right, I got my own way to believe" "There’s no way, mine is mine and yours won’t take its place, now make your getaway" And if you find yourself not believing in something you should choose to go your own way.

That the meaning of beliefs is to make life better for everyone. So you can't have your back turned to the future: "I’m bearing witness to some better things" "Everyone’s a critic looking back up the river Every boat is leaking in this town"

That religions don't want us to look forward. Instead they close themselves from the world: "Science says we’re making love like the lizards Try and say that fossils ain’t profound Silence says we’re not allowed to consider Silence says stand up sit down you’re out"

There is one section that I can't understand fully, that is: "Holy rollers sitting with their backs to the middle all alone and sinking the bow" What it means to sit back to the middle in a boat? And for what is the boat metaphore for? Religion?
