To me, this sure seems like a reference to the Whore Of Babylon from the book of Revelation. The whore represents the hypocritical religious leaders who have been in bed with the political leaders doing all their dirty deeds but trying to make it look pretty by attaching God's name to it. However, the political leaders are now getting tired of their old used up whore and are ready to destroy her since she is no longer attractive or useful.
