Stay Awake Lyrics

I am the blank page before you
I am the fine idea you crave
I live and breathe under the moon
And when you cross that bridge
I’ll come find you

Stay awake with me
You know I can’t just let you be
Stay awake with me
Take your hand and come and find me

I don’t have a skin like you do
To keep it all in like you do
I don’t have a soul like you
The only one I have
Is the one I stole from you

Stay awake with me
You know I can’t just let you be
Stay awake with me
Take your hand and come and find me
Stay awake with me
You know I can’t just let you be
Stay awake with me
Take your hand and come and find me

this is my first post, but i really like this song right now, and i had an idea for how this could be interpreted. as with any song or work of art, it can mean something different to every single person who encounters it, but this is just how i take it.

i feel as though it could come from the perspective of the creative mind at night, whether it be writing songs or painting pictures or what have you.

literally, i am the blank page before you, i am the fine idea you crave - this is as if you were sitting down to write, and your mind will not let you leave the page before exploring this emotion you can't move away from. you're just searching for the right words.

i live and breathe under the moon, and when you cross the bridge i'll come find you - this is (as with most artists, regardless of their particular outlet) as if all of her long, quiet nights of thought and self analyzation leave an open space for creating, giving the impression that it is a real person you visit in the evening, who is waiting and will find you at the end of your 'bridge' and help you source and communicate your feelings.

stay awake with me, you know i can't just let you be - the feeling is there, don't leave the page blank and potentially lose your work in dreams, stay awake and work it out, express it.

i don't have a skin like you do, to hold it all in like you do, i don't have a soul like you, the only one i have is the one i stole from you - again, literally. despite the feeling that her artistic outlet is a real 'person' existing alongside her, the only way it can find a voice is to be spoken for. it can't hold in feelings like a person can, it's like an inner voice constantly saying 'something is not right, you're missing something', it's the nagging thought in the back of your head that you should say something, but what...? and the only soul it has, is the one that was contributed by the artist almost unwillingly, because like with most things you create abstractly, your heart and mind sort of become hostage to whatever your muses are... almost as if they're suddenly possessed by a feeling in order for you to make beautiful things.

My interpretation of this song is someone asking another to stay awake spiritually. Meaning look at me, look at us, we can be anything together we dream to be if we just don’t let go. One is holding it all back and had not crossed that bridge from a spiritual perspective of what the love and connection could be, but the speaker is saying I can’t do that, I can only love you with my whole soul. Stay awake with me; I just can’t let you be. Their songs all have an otherworldly vibe, this is also that way, but also feels human to me. Relatable, as if you’re waiting for your soul mate or twin soul to come around.

This sounds like, perhaps, a prostitute's perspective of her work or maybe an emotionally jaded and consequently distant individual- who craves for some type of attention, but is too afraid of being vulnerable. "I am the blank page before you I am the fine idea you crave"... "I don't have a skin like you do To keep it all in like you do I don't have a soul like you The only one I have Is the one I stole from you" Is the conforming of herself so that she will be accepted by the listener- too afraid of letting her own self be known so as not to face rejection. Yet she pleads for the listener to "stay awake" with her and to come and find her...

All in all, a gripping song.

I know this is 3 years too late, but thought I would add my piece.

I believe the song is meant to be the voice or the perspective of a dream! So not a person but the physical manifestation of someone's dream.

"I am the blank page before you I am the fine idea you crave.
I live and breathe under the moon And when you cross that bridge I'll come find you ..." Like all dreams it starts blank, based only upon the dreamers craving or subconscious urge. It only exists in space... under the moon... and when you 'cross' over to the sleep and dream state, it will come and find you.

The chorus is a little deeper and supposed to be ironic... the dream itself is telling the dreamer to stay awake... but within the dream state... therefore its asking the dreamer to stay in the dream and take its hand and find

The second verse is probably the most telling and the reason why I believe it is not a person... Clearly stating " I don't have a skin like you do...i don't have a soul like you" ...therefore not real. Further it states that it has no soul, except the one stolen from the dreamer... for the purpose of the dream.

If you listen to the song again with the above in mind it, it begins to make sense.

Still a beautiful and powerful song.

@Aoghana The voice is of an eternal song, calling to the human it belongs to (the self) reconnect, to wake up:

I am the blank page before you (the soul is blank page as it belongs to the pre-existence of the body).... Stay awake with me (we are all asleep, thinking that we are our bodies and mind...we are more than that). You know I can't just let you be (the soul call us to come back home). Stay awake with me , Take your hand and come and find me

I (the soul) don't have a skin like you...

@tamir10562 Thanks for the reply. Again, as I hardly check this, apologies for the delay in a reply to your comment.

I appreciate your perspective, but not sure I can agree; although I've tried to test it as 'the soul' , it doesn't work! Primarily because the song mentions the fact that it doesn't have a soul - It's akin to a double negative! Why would a soul mention it has no soul? Or have to steal one! It is a soul...Not sure that part adds up.

Further, the soul is not a blank page in the beginning; they referred...

Some great interpretations here.

Mine is similar, but slightly different. Having been at the bedside of a dying loved one, this song evokes all of those feelings and fears, and happy recollections that one has in that sad and inevitable situation we all find ourselves in at some time in our lives.

The first verse feels like that typical deathbed bargain being struck, trying to be for that dying person what they need, when they cannot act for themselves. I have seen and felt this on a few occasions, when the loved one is shutting down, cannot communicate, and you are frantic in trying to keep them alive whilst they die.

The 3rd verse reminds me of a friend of mine, whose husband was dying of cancer at home. She loved him totally, and felt that as he was going, he was taking her heart and soul with him, and that she was not worthy of him (a common feeling for spouses sitting by the deathbed of their partners).

The chorus and refrain is the promise, that they will meet again, and on the other side, where time is not linear, she will be there and he is to go find her. It is the promise that as we all die, we will all meet again in the afterlife, possibly instantly, as time has no meaning there.
